Got D&D Insider; Don't need books

I completely disagree! It makes throwing an encounter together on-the-fly absolutely painless for me. :D

    Infinite damage at level 1

Except it doesn't. While your point is valid that, yes, the DM can (and, IMO, should) reach across the table and slap anyone who honestly tries any sort of infinite damage combo, it absolutely works RAW. Yes, the DM can limit your number of free actions, but "can" is different from "will" and...

    Infinite damage at level 1

Doesn't technically fix either problem. Teleporting vertically, the teleport destination is above the zone, not in the zone. Teleporting outside to a dangerous spot is also outside of the zone, so they just end up not moving until it works. Sure, as a GM you can limit what they do. But, the...

House Rule - Changing Dazed and Stunned

Though I personally have no problem with the effects, I'd probably houserule it to something simpler: Stunned - At the beginning of your turn, make a save. If you succeed, you can take one action this turn, rather than none. This doesn't remove the stunned effect, and you still make the normal...

What do your parents (currently) think of D&D?

My father's the one who taught me how to play! ;) To put things into perspective a bit, I'm a current college student, so I seem to be younger than most other posters in this thread. When I was younger and my grandmother was moving, she came across my father's old D&D books (along with other...

Thanks! Didn't know about that one. :)

D&D 4E State of the Art - 3rd Party Material for 4E - Your Experiences

The key word here was "seem", not to mention the fact where I said I just flipped through it rather than combing through it in some detailed faction. It was mostly just jumping around/skimming, I don't own it. :p

Monsters with half HP and double damage

In pure theory, the less extreme ones (such as the first reply to the thread) would probably work better. Yes, half survival time but double damage should average the same total damage over a long period of time, but keep in mind a few things: It'll make combats more swingy Minions get all the...

    Using Intelligence for Initiative

Sorry, I meant relative to Intelligence. Int also adds to AC, and is the basis for a lot of powers. For basic ranged, though, yes Dex has a bonus, but most people who need a ranged attack have another option they can fall back on. For specific examples, heavy thrown weapons for STR, many (most...

    Burning Oil

Alchemist's Fire is a burst 1 w/in 10, +4 vs reflex, 1d6 dmg on a hit, half damage on a miss. Basically, it's the difference between throwing a minor "grenade" item, versus setting the ground on fire. Very different :) It's enough where I'd allow it. Also, Alchemist's Fire only costs a standard...

    Class Acts - Wizard

You can do that with anything that occupies a square, though. Flaming Sphere is a level 1 example, and that doesn't even require a door, just a 1-square bottleneck ;)

    Pre-written treasure parcel handouts?

Morrus, you're too lazy to look up a couple items before a game, but you have the drive and initiative to create an ongoing series of treasure parcels in a grab 'n go format for people, pretty it up, proofread it, and publish it? Maybe it's just me, but that second one seems like a lot more work...

    Using Intelligence for Initiative

Dex doesn't have that much in-combat use outside of stealth, but Int does with covering virtually every skill that identifies monster origins/weaknesses/etc. ;) I'd say Dex getting initiative, whereas Int revealing stuff about monsters, is a fine system.

    Burning Oil

How does this sound for ruling burning oil? That is, dousing an area with oil and setting it on fire. Keep in mind, it'll take most characters multiple actions to do anything useful with it. (Yes, I'm aware that, technically, Prestidigitation has a clause about not dealing damage. It costs a...

D&D 4E State of the Art - 3rd Party Material for 4E - Your Experiences

Sticking purely to 4e-specific stuff, because you want crunch: My Wizard player recently picked up Mongoose Publishing's The Quintessential Wizard. After flipping through it (not combing it for every possible minor imbalance), I allowed it. It seems to offer a ton of really cool options that...

    Only Player Sheets? dndsheets.net!

You simply cannot beat iplay4e, IMO. Current overhaul version: iplay4e game table Older version that's being replace: iplay4e characters It looks best when it's a character you've uploaded, as that enables the damage/second wind/rest/etc buttons. :) I'm a fan of full view (more like the old...

    Bad DM'GM'ing

A bad DM is a DM who doesn't want to improve, and/or doesn't care about his game or players. A good DM is a DM who's willing to learn from his mistakes, and actually gives a damn.

Is a dying character still bloodied?

It's only a 3x3 square. Plus, if they keep standing back up, that DOES justify throwing a coup de grace at them.

    Wizard Build Suggestions (PHB ONLY!)

The more people applying Lasting Frost (and thus enabling Wintertouched), the better. Especially because one miss makes you lose out on it for the next turn, but your allies applying it saves you from that worry.

    So how is 4th edition?

These two make me lean heavily toward "play 4e" for your particular needs. As a DM, 4th edition is a lot less work (with a HUGE part of that being that monsters are independent from PC creation), at least IMO. I find it a lot easier to wing it when it comes to encounter stuff. As far as...
