Rampart Soldier - A ranged Fighter build (Updated 2/4)

Unfortunately, I have no idea why that's doing so or how to fix it. I will look into this, but I'm using the default editing, so I'd expect it to function with any of the schemes.

    Autumn Kingdoms (Homebrew Setting Design)

I like the race. I would like to break it down using the PF racebuilder, so that you can see how it stands up to other core races (assuming they all remain options to play). So, compared to PF Dwarves, these lose: Darkvision (2rp), Defensive Training (1rp), Greed (1rp), Hatred (1rp)...

    Making firearms more important

Something like this perhaps? Characters can make ranged attacks in melee with one-handed weapons without drawing attacks of opportunity (unless attacking with a melee weapon would also draw one). And rather than increase overwatch's radius, we could include a sniper feat. It would allow for...

    Making firearms more important

Here's a quick look at the completed rules as we've discussed them. I formatted them as a preview that I also plan to put up on the EnPublishing forum. Of course, questions and comments are always welcome. Thank you for the help, and pending Morrus' input these should be what we'll see in the...

    Making firearms more important

Alright, my current plan is to leave Overwatch as a 50 ft.-radius to 1) distinguish it further from suppressive fire, which works in a cone and a line and 2) keep combat from becoming too reliant on miniatures/maps (ie facing). Testing it out last night in play, the radius doesn't feel too big...

    Making firearms more important

I felt like fanning left, then right would be better represented by a radius. Maybe 50 ft. instead? Felt too powerful, but maybe not. As a cone, I would definitely want to keep the half move after you've already sacrificed a round to do it. At least that way you could still reposition the cone...

    Making firearms more important

Alright, I can work with that. So, running with it, we've got something like: The party enters the building in formation. The soldier takes point and uses overwatch to keep an eye out for bandits. Immediately, he fires on two foes who think to sandwich him in a doorway. One goes down, so he...

    Making firearms more important

Paint me a scenario here, if you will. Right now, I'm seeing these as follows. Suppressive Fire: As the engineer works to fix the damaged computer console, bullets are flying by his head. His ally, the soldier, steps out from behind the door and lays down a spray of bullets to keep the bad guys...

    Making firearms more important

I like that as a maneuver. One thing I need to do is explain clearly what items are automatic or not. I'll be sure to do that. How's this? Suppressive Fire (Combat Maneuver): Sometimes it becomes necessary to protect your allies from enemy fire. By doing so, you give them a chance to shoot...

    Autumn Kingdoms (Homebrew Setting Design)

I definitely like the concept, and will be following this thread while you work out mechanics. If I see anything I can offer a suggestion on or question that can be answered, I'll pop in. :)

    Making firearms more important

That's what I would say too, I just wanted to be sure we're on the same page. So, here's a short list of things I would think to do to promote ranged vs. Melee 1) classes aren't immediately proficient with classic weapons. A very short list (baton, dagger, arm-blade) exists for the characters...

    Making firearms more important

Not exactly what I meant, but I get what you're saying. I do have a question, though. What is it, right now, about ranged combat in PF that makes melee better? Why do people prefer to close in for combat? I think, if we can really dig in and answer that question, we'll have our answer.

    Making firearms more important

As a player, I agree, I just don't have any suggestions at the moment that could improve it without making it the optimal tactic in prectically every situation. Or are we really aiming for that?

    Making firearms more important

How's this for an updated weapons description? There is a wide variety of weapons available in the galaxy. The democracy issues batons and battering rams to some of their troops to avoid hitting innocents in crossfire. Thieves may carry daggers to quickly and quietly remove...

    Making firearms more important

I see cover fire as aid another that would grant +2 to AC against the target of the cover fire. Overwatch is more reliant on the GM to have NPCs hide behind something, possibly with cover fire, that necessitates waiting for them to come out from behind cover. If we're strengthening them, maybe...

    Making firearms more important

Hehe, simple and elegant. Would we put it in under the Weapon and armor proficiencies of the classes, make a sidebar/section spelling it out in equipment, or some combination of both? We could also make any weapons not specific to the setting exotic. That's a one-sentence addition, "Weapons...

    Making firearms more important

Half-joking: A simple fix would be to give nobody proficiency with those weapons. You can buy it if you want, but that's a feat you're giving up. Classes still get proficiency with firearms by default since if you're a hero, you know how to wield them (whether or not you like to). A more...

    Making firearms more important

I like where this is going. The idea that the weapon hurts up close is a good one, and I think we can maybe expand on the idea. Maybe within 1 range increment, they deal higher damage, or crit for more? It still means you want to be close, but you don't have to be in melee. Addons like scopes...

    Tech-Use in a non-Tech-dominated world

It sounds to me as though these "tech-blessed" characters would be very good with creating things on the fly; so if one needed something akin to a bat-arang, he could fashion a piece of wood or stone into it with some simple, easy to find tools in any location, and use it to better effect than...
