LONG REST: let's add some realism.

I probably wouldn't have a problem with that either. --- I don't buy this argument, particularly from 4E fans who insist that playing the game when you have no healing surges left is the same thing as playing hurt. You aren't feeling fine. Your offensive skills may be working just fine, but...

LONG REST: let's add some realism.

Yes, that is what the playtest packet says, but that's not what Mearls said in the post on Hit Points. It's also not what 4E says about hit points. And my argument is that even in 1E, positive hit points had a portion of which were actual representations of physical ability to take damage. The...

LONG REST: let's add some realism.

So is the answer to remove any attempts at verisimilitude? I mean, if that's the case, then why shouldn't everyone be playing Super-Ninja-Merlin-Wolverine? Or give everyone 25000 Hit Points and the innate ability to fly and shoot lightning bolts from their ass? No one is asking for a game that...

    The "Smell Test"

I mostly play 3.X/PF, but I identify most with 2E, so that's what I checked. If I thought I could do it, I'd pull back some of the 3E innovations into 2E and just used that home-brew. That said, I like most of what I see from DDN. It's passing my smell test right now.

    D&D 5E (2014) Guidelines for D&D Next playtest/adventure discussion here at ENW

My problem was not volume-related. It was tied directly into the fact that the email address I registered with was different from the one I used for Wizards (I actually didn't have an account anymore as I'd discontinued it in 2009), and that's not something that was mentioned until after emails...

LONG REST: let's add some realism.

Well, that's demonstrably wrong. In Chainmail, one hit was death. In OD&D, you got 1d6 hit points per level and damage was 1d6 for each weapon, the inference being each hit was actually physical damage. AD&D broke with this and inflated HP progression and then came up with the idea that HP were...

LONG REST: let's add some realism.

Well, if wizards didn't also have HP to manage, then it would be a valid argument, but they do. Similarly, every class has to rely on Hit Points and manage those, but only wizards and clerics have spells to manage. Setting the default refresh rate for HP and spells as the same is, again, a...

Anyone know about historical sea traditions, religion, folklore?

The use of the word "port" to mean left is a relatively recent phenomenon in nautical history. Up until the middle 1800s, the left side facing forward was the larboard side, a corruption of "ladderboard." The calling of directions in the wind caused a lot of confusion, so the term "port" which...

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

That was how I justified it in my head, and it applied to any creature that had fewer hit points left than the slayer's minimum damage. It was still anti-climactic, but with that bit of fiction added into my head, I could accept it without too much of a problem.

LONG REST: let's add some realism.

I just don't understand this rationale. Spells and hit points are two separate things. One measures the human body's ability to avoid or take damage. One is a measure of concentration and mental power. I can still read even when I have a gash on my knee, so my mental power is not slowed. I can...

LONG REST: let's add some realism.

Mearls already mentioned a split in an earlier article. He didn't use the term bloodied, but that was the general idea.

So the playtest is out: What do you think? The EN World poll!

I voted liked it, but I'm just a little bit to the "meh" side of "like."

Well, it's: 1) Sign up in indicate interest 2) Wait for email 3) Click link in email and go to website that requires you to sign up for the forums on that site 4) Wait for second email 5) Click second email 6) That doesn't work for hours and hours and hours, sometimes even after the web people...

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

Provided that the math works and is easy to change on the fly by the DM, it should be fine in either direction, but that first part is the tricky piece of the puzzle.

And then contradicted later on. Again, people argue this crap about religious texts all the time. They cherry pick the one rule that they say is clear as day and completely unambiguous, and ignore the rest. That's what you've done. Besides, if we're really going to be pedantic about it, use the...

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

It's not. But it's contradicted in other places even on the same page. One cherry-picked quote might be unambiguous. I've demonstrated that I can cherry-pick quotes, too. This is like the people who cherry pick pieces of religious works to insist on one reading, but not accepting the others...

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

We've now shown contradictory pieces of Gygaxian prose from several different locations in the same book. At this point, Gygax has done more to confuse the issue than clear it up because he was wishy washy on a clear definition (see my comment way earlier in the thread about Mearls definition...

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

Yes, so if you cast those spells to heal someone, you are then out those spells until your next long rest. Maybe/maybe not, but leaning towards maybe not. That said, that's a flavor thing and far easier to just house rule without impacting the mechanical implications of the game. So the long...

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

In my brief playtest with just myself, I found that I stopped rolling attacks with the slayer and the wizard in the combat with the kobolds and the rats. It felt a little awkward to just be killing things without needing to roll, but they were kobolds and rats, so I overlooked it. Once the party...
