Star Wars RPG Beta: Are they serious?

It does look as though they are imitating the 40k RPG structure of splitting different power levels of play up into different core games- we get smugglers and scouts of the outer rim as book 1, then something like pirates and independent capital ship operators as book two maybe, and then full on...

Sorcerers should use Con not Cha

You're correct- just not sure how much sense it makes in the wider scheme of things. I think willpower could legitimately be assigned to be a function of either Wis or Cha or both- historically it has been Wis, which I think makes ever so slightly more sense- but the current movement seems to...

    Whither the gnome?

It would be fairly at odds with the way these races have been done in the past. The idea was 1) the Underdark is a lot more dangerous than the upper realms, so to survive down there you need to be more powerful, and 2) the magical radiation of the Underdark tends to make creatures that live...

Sorcerers should use Con not Cha

Yes, it seems like with 5e we open yet another chapter in the ongoing 'what exactly do Wis and Cha correspond to?' wars. WotC has seemed to have been of slightly different minds about this between 3e, 4e, and today (case in point: Goblins had a bonus to Cha in 4e. Entirely made sense in the...

    Reclaiming Blingdenstone (Traps)

That is the way I would take it. * Walking along, not looking for anything in particular: Wis * Carefully investigating as you go: Int So thematically I would interpret it as: if you are not looking for something, your Wis score gives your odds of noticing that something is off before walking...

Archer and Dual Wielder Specialties: What am I missing?

Talking about Combat Expertise the 3e/PF Feat, not Combat Supremacy the 5e Fighter Feature- in other words, no deciding to trade hit bonus for AC after you have already seen whether you hit or not without the bonus. Obviously on-hit effects like Cleave, spending CS dice, Sneak Attack, etc., can...

Archer and Dual Wielder Specialties: What am I missing?

Typically you must declare your attacks for the round before resolving them. As a DM, I would no more allow a player to retroactively decide to switch from a single attack to double than I would allow a player to decide to use Combat Expertise after seeing the results of a hit roll.

    Whither the gnome?

A bit OT, but Aragorn was certainly human. He was the last of the line of the Numenorian kings, the Men of the West. They were the 'best' or highest men, but still human.

Jack of all Trades & Survivor

I think this is closest to hitting the mark. Remember, we don't have complete rules for selecting Feats without a Specialty yet- something that we will ultimately be able to do. Survivor and Jack of All Trades reflect a pair of Feats that are 1) popular with people customizing a first level...

Please stop complaining about missing material

I agree in general, but I will also say that there seems to be some confusion about which areas of the packet constitute the proposed form of the new game vs. material that was just copied over as an expedient. It would be nice if the playtest materials marked filler sections as 'not yet...

    Whither the gnome?

I considered that as an option, but ultimately decided they were mostly 3e gnomes with a slightly more elaborated and specific culture. Were there other differences I'm forgetting, other than their creepy secret police and mark of scribing?

D&D 4E 4e and reasons why a resurection would fail.

    * The deceased's god has intervened to prevent the resurrection. * The deceased promised their soul to a powerful extra-planar entity in exchange for power, and that entity is not interested in letting it go. * The deceased had their soul 'harvested' and placed into a magic item or storage...

    Weaker 1st level characters

Most people are going to likely start with whatever is presented as the default in the core books. Even if there is text somewhere that says 'by the way, unless you want a really lethal, old-school game, we recommend you start at level 3', then a lot of new players are going to start at level 1...

Creating your Character vs. Meeting your Character

I think random gen is great for something like this- a short term, possibly high lethality campaign run in an old-school style. If someone gets a set of stats/class/whatever they hate, they probably aren't stuck with it long, and if a 'bad' character survives against the odds for a number of...

    [Playtest 2] "Encounter" Building

I would tend to think that anything that was actively under discussion between the last packet and this one is probably going to show up in the next packet, not the current one. I suspect that their approach is to get discussions started about theoretical goals and get some feedback, write some...

    Whither the gnome?

We've seen character creation rules to date, but only for the core races. We know that gnomes (along with half-orcs and the rest) will be 'uncommon', which could mean they will be pushed into a second PHB, like they were in 4e. Gnomes got a big re-think in the lore department between 3e and...

    Weapon Proficiency: All or nothing?

I liked it too- in general I like things that make different weapons 'feel' and play differently, and give some reason to use things other than 'the best' weapon with the highest damage, but I wonder how this will work with the flatter to-hit math that we've been hearing about. 4e used the...

    Being Chased in a Maze

Is this a stone-'n'-brick maze- that is a real, physical, immutable maze- or a quasi-magical maze that can rearrange itself in response to what the PC's do or don't do? In the latter case you can reduce the amount of actual drawing and mapping that you have to do by having things like pathways...

What setting would you like to see as RPG?

I'd like to see the setting from the Bruce Stirling/William Gibson novel The Difference Engine. It overlaps a little bit with some Steampunk concepts, but the direction of technological development is much more in the area of information processing and communication rather than steam cannon and...

World demographics - how many of each major race?

There wasn't a lot of direct fighting during the February and October revolutions- mostly mass strikes and protests. The Tsar ordering the troops to forcibly put down the protest actually touched off the mutiny that started the February Revolution. A lot of the military ultimately defected to...
