Is high randomness good for an RPG?

For me, absolutely yes! Randomness drives a lot of creativity. That adds an extra roll...which adds extra time...which slows the game. Depends on the game. Warhammer does that for critical hits and it works great...but crits are big game moments so the slow down adds to the tension...

What's Your Favorite Tournament Module of All Time?

I wrote tourney modules for years for the LA conventions. I even posted a "How to Win D&D Tournaments" thread on ENworld a few years ago. From a design standpoint, your biggest factors are Time and Replication. AKA, your event has to begin/end within X hours and your event needs to be...

    4e Change of mind

Got excited by the previews. Enjoyed the demos. Enjoyed running the ENworld pre-release version Tossing my 3e stuff on eBay was wonderful. Enjoy running the actual 4e game. BUT...I have a shelf full of RPGs and I don't need any one game to fulfill all my hopes and dreams 24/7 which seems...

Are you a Player or GM?

I have a theory. I suspect that the majority of online gamers are GMs and that few people who only play RPGs are actually involved in the online community. Maybe I am wrong. Let's see. BTW, why do you GM so much? Or why don't you GM? Or why don't you play more instead of GMing so much...

    How is 2nd Edition?

I preferred 1e Gygaxian insanity versus 2e's "mommy friendly corporate cleanup", but the 2e settings were fabulous - especially Planescape which still stands as the best fantasy RPG setting I have ever played. These days, if you want an AD&D gaming experience, I suggest downloading OSRIC for...

I Think I Am Going About It Wrong

You are doing it wrong - even after you have read the sacred blogs? And you now admit your folly in public? Prepare for punishment! I also read lots of OD&D blogs, but I treat them like television evangelists. Some are humorous, some are insightful and all of them are pushing their agendas...

    Palladium system question

I just ran 4 Palladium events at OrcCon this weekend (Mechanoids and Ninjas & SuperSpies) and the games were fun and easy to run and my players (mostly Palladium noobs) had a great time. Palladium, like AD&D and many other early RPGs, really shines when you houserule them to fit your own GM...

Will the CPSIA harm the role playing games market?

This is a non-issue for the RPG world. Law enforcement is going to focus on products aimed at children who are in the chewing age group - not those in pre-Algebra classes. If a particularly insane Attorney General decided to chase down D&D books, it would be a no-brainer to just slap 13+...

    Recomend A Game System?

Use whatever system your group likes best. Whatever floats your boat. However, the only RPG with good and easy rules for merchantile trading is Classic Traveller. There is a very easy to modify system in Book III (find it on eBay) that I converted over for D&D years ago so the PCs could...

    D&D Interactive at OrcCon 2009

If you are a D&D 4e fan in Southern California, the OrcCon convention is hosting a special D&D interactive event in addition to dozens of RPGA Living Forgotten Realms events and 400 other game events, including several dozen RPGs of all kinds. What is a D&D Interactive? Its a massive group...

When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

Go read the editorials and letters from 1970s and 1980s gaming magazines, particularly non-TSR mags but even Dragon had lots of discussion. Lotsa eyebrows were raised over many things. Mature gamers have always understood the game rules are malleable and immature people have always acted...

    What's new with the GSL?

Dude, be cool. Scott has been amazingly open through every step of the process. He's only part of the GSL process and when he says he's submitting his part, we as fans/consumers owe him enough respect to believe him. With any contractual agreement, its gotta move through lawyers before...

How I got rid of the 5-minute adventure day and nova-resting

I never had this problem because just the threat of Wandering Monsters was enough to get PCs moving along. There was always a clock ticking. The longer you spend in the dungeon, the more potential beasties will find you or find the horses and camp you set up on the surface...

Have you played Mazes & Minotaurs?

One of the coolest things about M&M is that the rules are not clones of D&D, but instead are "inspired by" the original rules with a clear understanding of the 30+ years of game development since then. And Betote, if you like cheesy with your gaming, M&M will do you good. The background is...

Have you played Mazes & Minotaurs?

I saw the discussion about OSRIC and Mutant Future, so now we must speak of the utterly awesome MAZES & MINOTAURS!!! Mazes & Minotaurs M&M Like the other retro-clones, Mazes & Minotaurs is available free on the web and the rules are a throwback to Old School gaming. The premise is "What...

How Many Have Looked At/Played Mutant Future

If you like Gamma World, download Mutant Future. Even if you don't use the rules, you will want the resources and assorted coolness. Personally, my fav part the Mazes & Mutants option where you can combine Labyrinth Lord and Mutant Future.

    What's new with the GSL?

There was much gnashing of teeth when the GSL first showed up. What's new with the GSL? Were the desired changes made? What's on the 4e horizon for third party publishers? Why am I seeing third party PDF stuff for 4e but nothing at the game store?

    Reduced HP for monsters: Approved.

I have intelligent monsters often flee when bloodied. There is no reason that all (or most) fights should go to the death. Encourage players to use Intimidate vs. Bloodied foes. Instead of the +10 Will defense bonus, give +5 (or even +0) if they are bloodied to make combats end quicker...

Curious about something: would you play in an AD&D campaign?

I would rather play Castles & Crusades than AD&D simply because I have played so much AD&D in the past and I would not want to hear the same old complaints again. Even moreso, I would love to play some B/X or OD&D and I would be happy to play the retro-clones Labyrinth Lord or Swords &...
