Worlds of Design: Too Much Dice?

There was considerably more rolling of 2D6 + Modifier vs. Difficulty after DGPs Task Resolution System was published for CT. No "buckets of dice", but more frequent rolls for a lot of skills than before. I loved CT (and MT) with the Task System. With the standard targets for different...

    Paizo Paizo Workers Unionize

Yep... brings back the good old days when people hated Paizo's evil management... for it's anti union stance as I recall. I guess WotC can look forward to someone else taking over as the target of internet outrage in a couple of years :D

Critical Role Announces Two New RPGs

I had this same thought. Hopefully they produce a game that streams well and is interesting in person at the table. Or, alternately, that plays well in online games. That might be its niche.

Critical Role Announces Two New RPGs

I'm not a fan of streaming games. I don't dislike them. I don't have time for them really. The time I have is spent working on my campaign and running it. I gather CR is at the top of the streaming pile. It should be, top notch voice actors would make for the best game to watch. The question is...

RPG Evolution: What If the D&D Movie is a Hit?

Amazon Prime e-mailed about it. Unfortunately, my time this Sunday is taken. So I will see it when it hits the regular release date :(

Honor Among Thieves: Road to Neverwinter Review

Chilling beverages (of any kind) in the Middle Ages meant storing it in a cellar. This can be fairly cool. They also cut and stored blacks of ice in insulated buildings / cellars for use in warmer weather. This would be a luxury of course.

Honor Among Thieves: Road to Neverwinter Review

Thanks for the review. A good D&D related novel is pretty rare, I look forward to reading it.

    Dragon Reflections #64

Thanks again for doing this series. I really liked the Assassin's articles in this one. I miss the anticipation of a new Dragon and the tactile feel of reading them and flipping through them. Showing my age I guess :D

D&D Movie/TV D&D: Honor Among Thieves Superbowl Spot

I don't think you are going to be the one eating crow. The more I see, the happier I am. I was cautiously hopeful to start with. On the other hand, those people who thought there could never be a good D&D movie... well crow could be endangered around here for a while. Of course, I may have just...

News Digest for the Week of January 6

I'm familiar with the OSR community. I don't disagree with most of what you've said. I can think of regular authors as well as numerous players in the OSR who don't fit the problematic mold (including myself). I started with D&D in 1974 and I've never stopped playing the older (or newer)...

News Digest for the Week of January 6

On the Gygaxes, Ernie is the problem child, Luke is afaik OK. Crawford and Norman don't have any issues attached to them. A number of the others mentioned are loud and problematic in any number of ways. They aren't the OSR though. Just the self-promoting and loud types in it. The OSR has a lot...

News Digest for the Week of January 6

Calling something "backward" is a slur in American English. "Retro", as in capturing an older style of gaming would be more accurate and less prejudicial. The idea that the entire OSR is full of racists / misogynists is, simply put, wrong. It's a diverse group.

Vote For The Most Anticipated RPG of 2023!

Cities Without Number at the top of my list (more Kevin Crawford is always a good thing, Cowboy Be-Bop (as much for the art and interesting background bits), and Lords of the Middle Sea (I liked the board game). The one I'm guaranteed to buy is CWN. The other 2 are probable buys (as were several...

Worlds of Design: Leveling vs. Training

IIRC, you still train, but don't need a master. It's self-study. The cost / GP (in 1E anyway) is set by class.

Worlds of Design: Leveling vs. Training

Pretty much. You have to regain the level before you can challenge again. You are reduced to the minimum experience for the level beneath the level you challenged and lost (in 1E, and OE).

Worlds of Design: Leveling vs. Training

They level up in order to make the challenge. If they fail (and live) they lose the level. So, any training done would come before the challenge.

Worlds of Design: Leveling vs. Training

In a system with dual requirements to level up (you need experience points and training), the best way was, imho, to have them able to "pre-spend" the money needed for training to level up (and burn the necessary time). In our games no one instantly levelled up. It took time and you were...

D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons New Cover Reveal

If they had made any changes, even minor ones, people would be saying "WotC made unnecessary changes to get more money!". Come to think of it, people are saying that about the new cover anyway :) Books get new covers routinely with new printings. Should RPG books be any different?

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Permanently Removes The Term 'Race'

I agree "breed" brings up some negative connotations. As for applying it (artificial selection for traits etc.) to sapient beings, it sounds like how the original dark lord, Morgoth, created Orcs in Tolkein's world. Sounds more likely, and even creepier, than the standard "Elves tortured and...
