    Reinventing the Wheel

Very different from when I started in 1979. I doubt I'd played D&D for ten weeks before I was exposed to Traveller and En Garde, and after three months I was already looking in shops for other RPGs in search of new ideas.

That would have required everyone who published anything to produce an SRD, and someone to enforce that rule.

What year did you start? Do you think being exclusively d20 that long is a common experience?

    Canada Worldbuilding

My Cold War Pulp game, set in 1950, has had a segment set in Canada, where it was discovered that someone ("probably a mad scientist") has been uplifting seals and (accidently) polar bears. There may be a sequel to this. Canadian tropes used so far have been: people being reasonable and...

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

Having had to cope with it, it creates areas where you don't go unless you really need to, or you can turn immaterial.

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

The systems I like best are Ars Magica, and GURPS' Ritual Path Magic. Both allow you to improvise small effects quite simply, and do larger ones with preparation. In Ars Magica, those are spells from the book, or which the character has put time into. Given that characters usually one have one...

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

You don't, but nor would I expect a group of RPG players to perform a musical. I've played scenarios about the production of operas, and they were about the production: getting finance, finding cast and crew, developing special effects, and so on.

    Pitch me the current RuneQuest

On reflection, a further point. In Pendragon, it's natural for PC knights to feel that they are at the centre of important events, because that's true as a tenet of the setting. In RQ2/3, that wasn't usually true for starting characters, and it came in gradually as they developed. In RQ:AiG...

    Pitch me the current RuneQuest

I heard Greg tell that tale himself, so it's at least mythically true. I just played my first session of the new RQ. I played a lot of RQ2-with-bits-of-RQ3 back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and read most of the Mongoose RQ material, and much of the Hero Wars material, but I hadn't played...

Crunchy Tactical RPG like 4e/pf2e but for Urban Fantasy?

For us, that depends on what we're playing. If most of the fighting is with guns, then TotM is just fine. But if it's melee, especially in fantasy games, the maps and positioning are quite important, and there are quite a lot of Martial Arts rules in use. The most fun version of that is to see...
