Hypothetical Fun: What If A Different Genre Was The RPG Foundation?

That seems the most likely origin point to me. The setting is easy to understand, the characters can move around it fairly easily, and law enforcement is patchy. However, there's a strong desire for justice, and a willingness to use violence.

"But it's AI generated! That makes it both brilliant and dangerous, or so the TV tells us! It's dangerous so we're cool! We're so clever, we're pioneering a new way of creating content and making money from it before that stops working!"

Evil Monster Ancestries - Yay or Nay?

For me, it depends on the setting and its societies. In the homebrew fantasy world I've run for decades, mundane creatures that usually have "evil cultures" such as orcs and goblins can be accepted in society if they are polite and well-behaved. They are regarded with suspicion, and have to...

Commentary thread for that “Describe your game in five words” thread.

The party are spearheading a small force to clear the guard point at a border, so that a larger force can pass through to attack a regional capital. The guard point has a fairly strong tower on each side of the road, and barracks, mess-halls and stores further back. This is in Greensward, where...

GMs - what is your vetting process for finding new players?

I've been organising the same home group since early 1998, and hosting it until it moved online during the pandemic. I was in my late thirties when it started and I'm now in my early sixties. Two other people have lasted the entire course; various others have come and gone. Having seen the...

What is the GM's Most Important Job?

There was a convention game where I didn't realise how determined two of the players were to act up until we were well into it. Indicating through events that if they wanted to get their characters killed, I wasn't going to stop them calmed them down.

What makes a "bad GM" or a "bad player"?

A habit of some players that is very annoying: playing a character that specialises in some real-world activity (being a naval officer, or being a leader of troops) while knowing nothing about it and not being willing to learn. I don't expect them to become experts, but learning some of the...

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

A supplementary question. Back in the 1980s, I never ran into anyone who had strong opinions about the virtues of roll-high vs roll-under. Why might that have been? One obvious possibility is chance: gamers had far less communication with each other in the days before the Internet, so possibly...

What makes a "bad GM" or a "bad player"?

The worst GM I've played with (once) was forgetful, arbitrary and vindictive. I played the session because it was classic Paranoia, where those qualities don't do nearly as much harm to the game atmosphere.

I apologise if that came over as a personal accusation. That was not my intention.

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

Or in other views, a week's groceries, or two round trips to visit family. I had to replace the roof of my house last year, so a book I'd likely read just once, and won't be able to use in the games I'm running, is not a very high priority.

Thanks. Since the UK price is almost £80, I'll wait for a used copy.
