    The Hero System "luck roll" mechanic gets used in a lot of the GURPS and D&D that I play. Roll 3d6. Sixes indicate good luck, ones bad luck. Other numbers don't mean anything. A mixture of 1s and 6s is mixed luck.

    A friend once claimed he'd figured out how it was meant to work. The system he explained was a bit complicated, but didn't require a lot of twisting of the words in the book. He tried running a game with it, and we took some delight in finding a different way for it to go wrong each round.

    Maybe his idea of "old school roleplaying" has condemnation from authority figures as a key element? Satanic panic and all that. If that made him feel cool as a teenager, he could be trying to recapture the feelings of those days. It sort of matches up with the rest of his career.

    The d20 change is just a question of rounding to 5% intervals, and then simplifying the physical act of rolling. It doesn't change any probabilities to roll with a d20 as opposed to d100 against numbers at 5% intervals. Pendragon did this well before D&D 3e made all of its rolls d20-based.
