Commentary thread for that “Describe your game in five words” thread.

It does with a little practice. For example, fighting that Iron Golem above, I found out in the first turn that it had DR in the 15-20 range, which meant I wasn't getting much damage through with ordinary hits. A quick PDF search revealed that attacking chinks in armour is at -8 to the torso...

Commentary thread for that “Describe your game in five words” thread.

We're in part 4 of Kingmaker, in the Tomb of Armag. We're looking for the present-day barbarian leader of the same name who thinks he's a reincarnation of the historical one, or something like that. The evil priestesses were a bit of a pain, via demon summoning and various blast spells, until...

Best "rats in the tavern cellar" map?

The ancient Judges Guild scenario The Dark Tower has a large dungeon, which includes an entrance from a tavern (there are several other entrances) and a rat warren, but from memory, the tavern does not lead to the warren.

How Quickly Do You Bounce Off a System?

I can bounce very fast if a game has an objective that I'm not sympathetic with. Examples: Fantasy Hero went on about how to design characters for the media you wanted to emulate. I don't: RPGs are their own genre, and trying to emulate a different one just makes things harder. D&D 4e was too...

Best "rats in the tavern cellar" map?

I suspect so: your post is only the second time I recall encountering it. The first was the introductory adventure in the SJ Games Dungeon Fantasy RPG, where the opposition rapidly gets beyond large rats.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

So you deliberately annoy him a bit, and drop hints that he might be happier representing himself? No, too much risk he'll complain to the Bar Association once he's lost.

Some mechanisms (often ported from the old days) are putting the incentives in the wrong place - blog post discussion

All of those things were happening years before Hickman. The game didn't tell you could do those things, but that didn't slow people down much.

Your Favorite Weird Game- Time To Talk About the Weirdest RPGs You Know!

Continuum was pretty strange. It was a time-travel game, which is a weird start. It managed the problems of paradox and changing the past by requiring the players to keep extensive records of what they'd done (and had not done, in effect). From memory, accumulated paradoxes, called "frag" made...

Some mechanisms (often ported from the old days) are putting the incentives in the wrong place - blog post discussion

In GURPS, encumbrance reduces your movement and your dodge. Since dodging is a "free" way of trying to avoid getting hit, this creates a lot of motive to keep your load light.

It's 2023. Smartphones Exist. Horror Gaming Still Does, Too.

If the horror is in any way supernatural, and intelligent, who's to say that the results from the smartphone search are accurate? Some hints that they are not are a good idea, even if they are. Also, relevant cartoon.

    What Should the Bard Be?

Essentially all of my 44 years of playing of D&D-family games has been in settings that weren't based on the idea of a single party. The bards I've played have been members of established parties at various points in their careers, but have also been played solo, or with other parties or groups...

    What Should the Bard Be?

To me, the bard is the character who puts stuff together about the setting. They dig out the meanings of old legends, fit those together with the cleric's understanding of people en-masse and the wizard's understanding of esoteric knowledge, and figure out what's really going on. Any character...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

US law seems to have much more entertainment value than English law at present. I admit my reasons for this impression are not fully representative, but there are several of them. NuTSR's cases. The legal entanglements of a current presidential candidate. Lowering the Bar's stories.

I want my actions to matter

There can be nuance in these things. I'm playing in a group that's working through the Pathfinder 1e version of the Kingmaker adventure path. We're doing it under GURPS Dungeon Fantasy, but that doesn't really affect this. We're emissaries of a Lawful Good kingdom, so we're trying to spread...
