[Ampersand] Bill Slavicsek on campaign settings

Aw, you're no fun. I always enjoy hearing stuff like this directly from a fan, rather than resorting to Wiki. Hearing it in... well, 'short form', I guess you could call it, just adds something to what's being told. Ah well. I'll read it anyway.

D&D 4E How would 4E improve my game?

Unless you have players with their hearts set on being something like a Druid, Monk, Barbarian or Bard, the core books should have everything you need. I'm actually wondering about this as well. I wanted to make a solo pre-4E adventure to introduce my girlfriend to the game, but found myself...

[Ampersand] Bill Slavicsek on campaign settings

This is (somewhat) off topic, but what are some of the specifics of Dark Sun anyway? All I know about it is that I have an old CRPG that uses the setting, but it got irreparably scratched before I could play too far into it, and it's about the only 'main' setting I don't know anything about.

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

Well, I think the point is that you're only supposed to be dabbling until you multiclass instead of taking a Paragon Path at 11th. Who knows, that might even allow you to dabble in a third class as well, seeing as how the excerpt went out of its way to mention Fighter/Mage/Thieves.

    Minion Status: Private or Public?

But what if one of the clan leader's sons in a complete schmuck but got chosen to lead because of his relation? He'd be a high ranking minion! *makes a note to do that later*

    Legionaire template

I'm not convinced that iconic abilities are kept, nor that no abilities are kept. It seems like it keeps RACIAL abilities... for the Kobold, it's the 'shift as a minor action' power, and for a skeleton, it would be its immunities, resistances and vulnerabilities, just to make a couple examples.

    Minion Status: Private or Public?

I don't see a problem with not explicitly telling the players who the mooks are. Generally, it'll become obvious within the first turn of combat anyway, which isn't any different from any of the movie examples people get bringing up where 'the mooks are obvious'. I mean, who can honestly say...

    What's your back-up game?

Well, as far as I'm concerned, I've got 3 options. There's Star Wars Saga Edition, Pathfinder, and maybe, maybe Exalted 2nd Edition. I tried the first run of Exalted, and the lack of any definitive power curve made statting enemies a huge pain, especially since I'm basically DMing it for the...

    D&D 4E 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

Some of my players, myself included, have loved the idea of rolling stats for a character, but I think I might pass it by for point buy this time around. I haven't given point buy an honest shot yet, and honestly, power discrepancies can arise when using the rolling method. Not to mention the...

Are we allowed to be excited for the system, but not D&D?

I don't mind 'DnDisms' too much... I haven't been DMing too long(maybe a year or two of on-again off-again play), and the group I'll be started 4E with will have little to no DnD experience, so we haven't really grown tired of a more traditional setting yet. I don't use Greyhawk though, although...

Are you bothering to read DUNGEON anymore? (and level index)

I might on-and-off subscribe to DnD Insider just for some of the stuff in Dungeon and Dragon magazines... Dragon lost its appeal to me in 3.5, but the new stuff it'll put out for 4E will be very appreciated in the beginning of the ruleset's life cycle. Dungeon I'm still interested in for a few...

    Non-trap skill challenge compendium!

Well, I've had two skill encounters half-formed in my head, although only one can be applied to multiple situations. It's sort of a double diplomacy skill check, going by the categories you've listed. One thing I will note, however, is that I wont be telling my players anything about required...

A Skill Challenge highlights the night...

Best skill challenge example I've seen on these boards yet. I do have to say one thing though, albeit not about the challenge itself. We don't have confirmation yet, but I personally believe that 1-hit-kill minions can't benefit from bonus HP. The reason comes from the fact that WotC decided to...

    Two Example Skill Challenges

First of all, I'm insulted that you think I'd allow a bs line of reasoning to fly in my game. No, you can't convince a mountain of anything. It's a mountain. It can't hear, it can't reason, it can't do anything. It's just a bunch of rock. However, creative use of skills should still be...

    Two Example Skill Challenges

EDIT: Dang it. I thought my router was having problems, so I hit stop, dealt with it, and then edited what I was posting. Didn't realize it went through that first time, when it seemed like it stalled out while loading. >_<

    Tier-crossing quests

I think that version may not be entirely correct, however... Epic tier is supposed to place you in reach of becoming or even challenging the gods. While having higher powers placing you on the path for Paragon level may make sense, Epic Destinies come across to me as the character making himself...

    Two Example Skill Challenges

One thing Celebrim keeps bringing up that he's obviously misunderstanding is that he thinks DM's will say "you can't use that skill". That's not the case at all, and flies in the face of everything a skill challenge represents. Any skill can be used, as long as the player can find a way for it...

AOE Spells - 1 attack roll vs. All Targets?

I humbly disagree on your second point. You're looking at half the party being stunned for 2 turns or more in that situation, which against a solo monster(which is all we've seen with such a powerful effect) kind of ensures defeat, if not TPK. If you can't Second Wind because you're stunned, and...

    Smuggled photos

As to why I label all of WotC as glowing item lovers... well, I remember seeing a DnD Insider preview video where the WotC rep was talking about how you would make your weapons in the character builder glow with a strength equal to their +x enhancement bonus. Hence, me thinking they really want...

D&D 4E My Warlord Concept - Why Does 4e Fail?

Again, as has already been said, just ask your DM if he'll allow you to activate your Warlord powers off ranged attacks. Even without multiclassing as a Warlord/Ranger, that'd allow you to use your character concept. And since you don't know, multiclassing in 4E works 3 ways. Half-elves get...
