D&D General Best and Worst Editions- For Adventures.

It kinda depends on what you want. A large number of the older adventures were dungeon crawls. If you or your players don't care for those (quite a common occurrence in my experience), those won't be very fun. I'm running B7 (Rahasia), but I am having a tough time getting the motivation to...

D&D 5E (2014) Here Are The Races In The New Eberron Book

I hope WotC doesn't do like they did in 3e, where we ended up with about 4 reprints of the thri-kreen race in 4 different books. Knowing the 3 goblinoids are just reprints from Volo's makes me sad. Curious how the orcs differ. If it is just removing the penalty to Int, that's kinda lame. Still...

Pathfinder 2E It's Finally Here! The Pathfinder 2E Review

I don't know how I feel about PF2e. I enjoyed 1e before one group killed the system for me. Unfortunately, what I read here doesn't really make me want to go out and purchase the new edition. I do wish Paizo luck and hope this new edition does great for them. I just don't see me playing it.

D&D General How Long Does It Take to get Sick of an Edition?

Glad you liked that. It's a more... polite?... way of saying a different word on the internet, so I try to use that instead of the other word for donkey that is the same word for those slabs of fat people sit on. :)

D&D General How Long Does It Take to get Sick of an Edition?

It isn't the system that I get tired of, but the players. I bought my 2e books in 1998 or 1999 (the silver 25 year anniversary editions or whatever the black cover books were). Switched to 3e when it came out (which surprised me as I had no idea it was in the works). Played that off and on until...

D&D 5E (2014) How do You Detail your Settings?

I go top down mostly. I've had this setting since 2003, though it was a proto-setting I created with my younger sister in 1996 or 1997 after we first read the DragonLance Chronicles novels. She lost interest, I didn't, so I took it as my own. I have expanded it and changed things since then. The...

D&D General Why Did They Change Gold Dragons?

https://i.imgur.com/5BUePnn.jpg Is this the one you are talking about? As for the topic at hand, I think some of the others gave the best reasons we can come up with since none of us truly know for certain.

D&D General What are your Pedantic Complaints about D&D?

In a continuation of Lucas Yew's point above, I have one similar. Monster ability DCs. From what I gather, after making many a new monster (conversions of older monsters, really), I have noticed practically every DC listed in the monster's stat block is based off of their Constitution bonus. I...

D&D General Does Your Fantasy Race Really Matter In Game? (The Gnome Problem)

Aren't they kinda the same thing, at least in D&D? They are extraplanar beings, not part of the "material plane", which would make them aliens. :p

D&D General What are your Pedantic Complaints about D&D?

That's one thing I liked about the 3e/Pf weapons, that being the critical hit modifications. Some weapons crit more often (greatsword on a 19-20) or end up doing more damage on a crit (x3 with great axe, or x4 with a pick). So, you could crit on a 19 with a greatsword and deal 4d6 (4-24 dmg), or...

D&D 5E (2014) Shoe Horning the Races by Class?

I made a post last night, but by the time I hit "post quick reply", the site was down for maintenance. Anywho, to paraphrase that response: As I have stated in various other race threads, this is why I split the ASIs. All races get a +1 to a score of the player's choice, while the classes give...

D&D General Does Your Fantasy Race Really Matter In Game? (The Gnome Problem)

Speaking of negative stereotype origins of dwarves and gnomes, I noticed a bit of a trend about 15 years back when I started to really get into making my D&D world. All the PHB races were "civilized" and lived in cities and villages, and were rather European. The evil races (such as orcs...

D&D General Does Your Fantasy Race Really Matter In Game? (The Gnome Problem)

Personally, yes the race matters. However, in many games I have played in, it doesn't really seem to matter to the DM. Right now I am playing a gnoll paladin/barbarian/warlock (backstory reasons), who uses "mask of many faces" to appear as a dwarf (she was raised by a dwarf paladin) even though...

D&D General The Evolution of Tieflings in D&D: Interviews with Zeb Cook and Colin McComb

Some people may "not know better", and think tieflings MUST look like someone dressed in a devil costume for halloween. Are they wrong? No. There's nothing inherently wrong with what the modern tiefling looks like, as a whole. Personally, I don't like EVERY SINGLE TIEFLING IN EXISTENCE MUST look...

D&D General The Evolution of Tieflings in D&D: Interviews with Zeb Cook and Colin McComb

Because that's the image people are exposed to when looking in official books, and with so many new people into the game, their only exposure is to the 4e/5e tiefling, so they think it must look like that. Same with Dragonborn. 4e they were plain brown with dredlocks, and had kinda beak-like...

D&D 5E (2014) Variable stat caps. Anyone ever used?

By "get rid of" I meant it isn't only just halfling rogues, tiefling warlocks, etc. Most people seem to choose their race on what gives them that +2 to their class's main stat, or choose their class based on the race's +2 bonus. So it opens up more than just tiefling warlocks or elf wizards. I...

D&D 5E (2014) Variable stat caps. Anyone ever used?

Just my preference, and brings a somewhat closer feeling to AD&D where 18 was basically the cap for anything. I originally wanted to make Gauntlets of Ogre Power more relevant and desireable for the martial classes (fighter, barbarian, etc), but with how ability scores act since 2000 with the...

D&D 5E (2014) Variable stat caps. Anyone ever used?

I just reduced the cap to 18 for all scores, removed the +2 from races and added it to classes (does not apply when multiclassing), and the races get a +1 to a score of choice. Gets rid of halfling rogues, elf wizards, tiefling warlocks, etc. Allows for goliath wizards, gnome barbarians, elf...

D&D General The Evolution of Tieflings in D&D: Interviews with Zeb Cook and Colin McComb

I prefer the 2e/3e/PF versions of tieflings (and aasimar) compared to the 4e/5e versions. I know we had a thread about that already. Personally, the more modern D&D interpretation is just a bit too much for me. It screams "edgelord" because every warlock seems to be one, and that class fights...

POLL: What edition of D&D did you most recently play/run?

Mostly due to how different various things were back then. One of the first creatures the party came up against was that gargoyle. Rahasia is for characters level 1-3, but the gargoyle has AC 5, 4 attacks, and can only be hit by magical weapons. Oh, and 16 hp. Open up the 5e MM, and you have a...
