    Saving the Bard

Bards do need saving, but not how you think. When a lore bard can cast nearly anything it seems...odd. I am happy to be beat up on for this unpopular opinion. For me, a bard focused on charms and the ability to influence through song, spoken word and knowledge could be cool. But it has to be...

So, I hate pdfs. Any advice on hating them less?

I don't have a problem. I do what I like. Sometimes it costs more but it's why I work. Maybe op could just go with his preference too?

So, I hate pdfs. Any advice on hating them less?

As it turns out every one (save one) of your pet peeves are shared by me. I don't hate all paladins...but gnomes, rapiers, dex builds and bards are fairly repugnant to me. And as to pdf format... I will never get used to them when reading rpg material. They are a useful adjunct, but that's...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Wall of Faithless in 5e?

If I had to bet... Objections to to the wall really are about some real world concerns players are grappling with. Why else care so much about the imaginary souls of imaginary people? I am no better. I want to play fiend patron warlocks but always have to have a way to do so without selling...

TSR Rob Kuntz Recounts The Origins Of D&D

"The above is the Forward [sic] reprinted from OD&D; but I am sure you knew that?" I started play with AD&D. I hadn't ever read this. I think it supports the idea that Arneson helped in a big way, invent D&D. In short it backs up a lot of what you are saying---and it's written by Gygax...

In the event my former post is nixed...read the foreword to the Holmes basic set by Gygax. Then discuss implications... I gotta say it changed my opinion a bit...

TSR Rob Kuntz Recounts The Origins Of D&D

This was posted online from the supposed foreword of the Holmes set. It was an early hit entering those search terms.... https://www.americanroads.us/DandD/DnD_Basic_Rules_Holmes.pdf If quoting here is not allowed I will happily edit it out. "ONCE...

    What is Greyhawk?

I think this is spot on. As teens, our DM bought the AD&D Realms boxed set. 1989? We liked it. The world seemed big and open and fairly uncharted. Oh how this changed! Later we find a crowded place with scores of active superheroes. The novels piled on new editions piled on products led...

TSR Rob Kuntz Recounts The Origins Of D&D

I won't hog anymore threadtime...and it's less dramatic of course but I was an uninspired student throughout school. I hated reading my assignments but learned some 10 cent words from D&D! Went on to be a psychologist and all that. I am dead serious---D&D led me to get a higher GRE score and...

Thanks for the great history. Great to know more about a thing that has enriched my life! I now know more than I did before and am glad that these guys (plural) invented and spread the fun!

TSR Rob Kuntz Recounts The Origins Of D&D

This has been a fun thread and article. However I need to check my understanding. Any feedback/clarification from anyone appreciated. It sounds like Gygax had combat rules including for fantasy creatures and effects before he actually had a true rpg on his hands (before meeting up with...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else feeling "meh" about recent 5e releases?

Imagine: d&d has been selling like hot cakes for years. And just when demand dips a bit comes a dark sun, realms, planescape or other long awaited book. I suspect they have something figured out here and have learned lessons from the past. For many, the slower release means more excitement...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else feeling "meh" about recent 5e releases?

You know what? You're right. You can imply edge and graphic content as desired. This approach is good for sales. But we have not abandoned demons and devils (the old panic is funny in light of Gygax going to church!) so it's a sweet spot. I willlet my gradeschoolers play the game with me...

TSR Rob Kuntz Recounts The Origins Of D&D

Agreed on most points. He got an award by the courts. But my point stands. He did not publish it or build it up. And my point stands about how much claim one has on an idea not furthered. Lots of people in academia have good ideas. They have no claim until published. Finally, gygax DID...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else feeling "meh" about recent 5e releases?

It's funny cause it's true! Well the Cinnabon and waiting for a ride part anyway. But the truth for me is yes, things are easier much easier now but that I also liked the weirdness and mystery of AD&D and its art...there is still fondness do the old product...just not the barriers to acquiring it!

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else feeling "meh" about recent 5e releases?

People have different opinions surely about a wide variety of things. But reading the OP has me feeling like an alien on an alien world. Playing AD&D 1st and a bit of third, I have never been so inspired as I am now. The core books are great. Xanathars Volos and mordenkainens are fabulous...

TSR Rob Kuntz Recounts The Origins Of D&D

I just did a quick search online and quickly hit on a foreword from OD&D, assuming it was a legit document. After following this thread and reading the article, I had the feeling that the foreword by Gygax essentially stated in 1974 that Arneson was responsible for the "campaign" concept with...
