I haven't really kept up with the changes to traps. Still with expertise and Guidance, that's +1d6 to the roll or rather 1d20 +1d6+5 with advantage on the 1d20. It all depends on the DC?

Ok then, so I'm going to trial the Level Up version of Expertise in my next game, where you add +1d4 instead of double proficiency bonus and give all the players an expertise related to their background. The idea, I think is that as it is less powerful and more random, the gap between haves and...

That's the beauty of it. Wear a wig and a cloak and you buy the poison from the village shop, claiming you have a 'rat' problem. A BIG rat problem.

Right, and then poison the water supply the following week.

I do take issue with this scenario though, because it completely overlooks the commoners as characters rather than stat blocks. Dragon fear means they have no choice but to flee but why do you assume that once they make their save, they would want to rush back in? Even assuming the most basic...

Maybe that's how the peasants win. By spending so long telling the dragon all the different ways peasants can win, it gets bored and goes back to sleep on its massive pile of treasure.

Realistically, militia, if you want to upgrade commoners, would sit between the commoner stats and the soldier/guard stats. There's no reason to change their stats but I suppose you could give them +1 to strength, +1 HD, and proficiency in spears. You could also have a mix of weapons to...

So your bowyer floods the market with free bows and has to turn to prostitution to make ends meet? It's time to break out the 1e DMG Harlot table!

Rogues can join militia but they prefer to be looting houses while everyone else is fighting, hiding, or fleeing.

Militias tend to be armed with simple weapons. It's normally only your town guard that are trained and armed with martial weapons. So spears and clubs are more likely than swords and bows but it does depend on how you build your town. The Greyhawk 1e gazetteer did give some guidance on standing...

Obviously, the DM sets the parameters and decides how much of a chance those villagers have but broad brush, commoners are averaged adults and settlements have GP based resource limits. You can roll the townsfolk up individually if you really have the time or even roll them up using something...

Dragon fear would rout most town militias and ordinary soldiers.

It was a functional philosophy but it wasn't to my taste. Killing minions was quite fun though.

D&D 5E (2024) Scaling monsters in the Monster Manual?

In a bounded system, it's not often needed. Hit points are averaged so you can level up monsters by giving them above average hit points or bybumping con or key stats by 2 to represent an exceptional specimen. Bumping them up a size could also be an option in some cases. Now that weapon...

Oh yeah I was mis-remembering 3e bonuses. I have not played 3e since 4e came out. This is an interesting quote but I would prefer to see a response to a direct query about no limit on PC AC in the bounded system. The highest attack bonus from monsters would be +19 with a +3 weapon. If your...

Yeah I suppose because we converted our characters from previous editions, we just never changed the rules and only applied the bonus to saves. I mean in 1e cloaks of protection only worked with no armour or leather. It was a bit more random but I could see the logic. Personally, I think...

Yeah it's so obviously wrong in the bounded system that you assume it must have been an oversight. I'd be interested to see the designers' reasoning for not either closing down stacking or just putting a hard cap of AC25. Of course, I also think they screwed up the stat boosting magic items...

Oh right. I suppose I always understood that in a bounded system, prevention of stacking was surely intended to be baked into the system and none of my players would bother to try and break the system. The highest AC we have is AC24 with magic scale armour and a sword of defending. I realise...

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

Wait now - 5e is an unbalanced mess? It's the most balanced version I've played apart from 4e, which had issues over feeling like a push button game with only slight variations in abilities. Every version has pros and cons. We're at 16th level and I can't recall any other version being this...
