D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

It's midnight here and there are too many double negatives for me to keep track of - I'm not even sure which posters are on which side of the debate because when one spins out of control, I just skip to the end. My interpretation, for what that's worth, is that the DM can decide if a reroll is...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Such a dry exercise might merely be posturing for a sense of superiority, since the rules themselves only exist to serve the game of the players that are actually playing them. We can express our opinions on why we interpret them in a particular way but saying, "because that's how I interpret...

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

It's possible that, as our group includes 7 fighters or multiclass fighters, intimidation is often the only way to go! Have you never watched US TV shows? Very few characters use persuasion to obtain what they want. Even Lucifer, one of the most charming characters, uses intimidation more...

But not in every situation. NPCS have personalities of their own and it's fun to give easy, moderate, and hard, ways to achieve a goal, as well as ways guaranteed to succeed. For me as well, I prefer degrees of success, and failure rather than all or nothing, depending on by how much you pass...

Yeah I'm not massively in favour of giving advantage for something so basic when in reality using the alternate stat will probably grant a lower bonus and leave open advantage for a really great idea. That said, if tool proficiency grants advantage to a skill check, it's very much in that ball...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Lol. I wasn't one of the people telling you how to run your game. I was trying to explain my reasons for how I run my game. This isn't a skill challenge where there has to be a winner and a loser. We can both be right. Or wrong. Or maybe you just failed your first Persuasion check. ;-p

While I realise that 5e did away with formal skill challenges, I took what I learned about using skill check as the basis for imaginative syorytelling from 4e and ported that across. Hence, while I agree that Charisma remains the go-to stat that you can always use, if you want to use strength...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

When you said they threw it in for the GM to fix, that implied to me that you find the system a challenge for you as a DM to fix. I was just saying, IMO, the whole game is about challenging the DM and players to collaborate in a way they all enjoy. So challenges for the DM to 'fix' are not...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

I don't view these DM challenges as a bug but a feature. The game isn't broke if it accommodates your personal style without missing a beat. If I have a criticism it would be that the game needs an online pdf with a few more examples of what is possible with different playstyles as not every...

ROGUE: Oh noes, I have tried to pick this lock for 6 seconds and it is so hard, I cannot doos it. URCHIN FIGHTER: Here, let me help. Jiggle that a bit more. Dammit. 12 seconds and this lock has us outwitted. CLERIC: Try again with the blessing of Kord. Oh dear. Try 10 hail Kords while you...

Context is king and if that works in your game and your gym life then that's cool. But equally an 8 stone weakling with a gob on them may be seen as if their threat is not credible. Don't mistake what in game terms was a failure to succeed on a roll as opposed to a suggestion that the roll was...

Not everyone wants a fight. Plus if it's someone you already knocked to 0hp, they may not want to fight but still might not want to talk. Context is everything. I might let a wizard use int to intimidate using the threat of magic or possibly an illusion or a priest to use the threat of divine...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

As someone who played versions where Dex didn't add to damage, I would be fine with this albeit many optimisers who extol the superiority of Dex builds might be very unhappy. I certainly think the 5e skill system could do with more example skill tests. One think I recall from 3e Living...

Throwing someone against the wall and threatening to break them is an intimidation (str) roll without question.

Yeah, my PC has been reconverted in each edition and still has broadly the same stats as 2e. She started with Dex15, Int17, and Cha14 because she was a human who dual-classed into a wizard. Over the years, in conversion, she morphed into a multiclassed sorcerer and warlock instead of wizard...

Does pelvic floor strength count as strength or Constitution?

You are arguing apples and oranges. In D&D terms, the weightlifter has a higher strength but is untrained in Athletics. The gymnast has a lower strength but expertise in Athletics. So in abstract terms, the gymnast can roll a higher roll in certain strength tests.

Apologies. I am not the most technically minded player / optimiser and my memory isn't great, so I may conflate points raised by different posters who have similar but different opinions. I think I understand the complaint and I understand that the obvious solutions such as skills, expertise...

Yeah, rogues don't really live for dex to damage since they get only one attack per round and most of their damage comes from sneak attack. Now that classic light weapons don't require a bonus action in off-hand, the TWF rogue, is getting free damage anyway. So that leaves fighters and...
