D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

Yes, fun is subjective but I know fewrr people with criticisms of the rogue class than any other class. If you look at rogues on paper, sure, you might say 'but all they can do is skills'. Stick them in a Dungeon setting though and cunning action lets them run rings around many other...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

I didn't mean a halfling would be incapable of carrying it but they would need to hold it upright at all times and would have a very limited swing. With a quarterstaff, they can at least grip it at any point of the weapon. With bows, the issue is more that the draw on a bow that is too long...

Lower tier for damage, perhaps, but top tier for versatility and fun.

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Yeah, I suppose in my game, if one of my players picked a build that flew in the face of logic, despite being game legal, they would be the butt of so many jokes, that might take the shine off the increased damage a bit. A halfling barbarian wielding a greatsword would need a cart to carry the...

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

The rogue is probably my favourite class. As someone who played thieves in 1e, the 5e rogue is a huge amount of fun. I never expected and would never want rogues to be top tier dpr. I think people who played 4e mistakenly believed that was the rogue's intended role but 4e was an outlier...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Many heroes in literature use smaller or less efficient weapons like quarterstaffs or daggers. The argument seems to be that character concepts are 'peanalised' due to inflicting a few points less damage due to more limited weapon choices without balancing the limitations against other...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Yeah, I suppose I am used to viewing it as different combinations have different flavours, some of which will have more strength and some of which will have more breadth. Some of the greatest heroic characters have flaws and weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages. A disadvantage only...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

This comes from a time when there were pros and cons to playing different species. They were based on stories and legends and were not well balanced against each other (neither were the classes) but you just got on with it. Halflings were fairly weak fighters long term but I still played them...

D&D 5E (2024) Brawler is out. What subclass should replace it?

I think I don't want the level 7 fighter ability to just be a narrow ribbon ability that will rarely be of use to a fighter. Fighters desperately need more versatility. Admittedly, an ability usable only twice per short rest is perhaps a bit limiting, but it has to be limited to avoid, as you...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Not every class has those other spells and one giant eagle isn't big enough to fly the whole party but there is definitely a difficulty in balancing very versatile spells. Maybe the animals should not arrive for 1d4 rounds if summoned as opposed to being conjured.

D&D 5E (2024) Brawler is out. What subclass should replace it?

Personally, I would rather see Royal Envoy give PDKs two 1d6 superiority dice and the Commanding Presence manoeuvre in preference to expertise, because it opens up combinations for more interesting warlord builds.

    D&D 5E (2024) UA 8 Barbarian Discussion

I dunno. We're just talking mechanics there. Thematically, Brutal strikes are when you go absolutely crazy all in. The other examples you mention are far more tactical. That should be fighter shtick.

Yes, it doesn't apply disadvantage. So advantage from another source still works. The AC penalty is the cost.

    D&D 5E (2024) UA 8 Barbarian Discussion

As far as the playtest goes I think linking it to Reckless Attack is more interesting. In the same way that the rogue gives up sneak attack damage for battle tactics, the barbarian, who is resistant to damage, gives up AC for tactics. At will battle control for martials is a new concept and...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

I like what they have done with barbarian and monk but I am worried that giving Barbarians and rogues their new tactical options AND weapon mastery is too much if all the fighter gets is weapon mastery. Take a leaf out of 1e Unearthed Arcana and keep weapon mastery as class features for...

D&D 5E (2024) Homebrew: New ability for Rangers; Rapid attack, it is fueled by spell slots, but adding more martial flavor to ranger.

If it was a magic action, it wouldn't stack with extra attack or action surge or two weapon fighting. That effectively level gates it and places a harder daily limit and a lower potential limit on the number of attacks. Is spending a 5th level spell for 4 attacks twice per day good resource...

D&D 5E (2024) An alternate Weapon Mastery system I'm noodling...

The issue for me is more that only fighters, monks, and rangers need these as class features. They should be available to a lesser extent with feat investment to other classes but paladins and Barbarians get enough interesting combat utility as it is.
