Personally, I think only Rangers and Fighters should get weapon masteries as class features. Everyone else should be able to pick one up as a feat and those with the mastery feature should have a feat for adding a second mastery to a weapon as per the playtest.

Harking back to 1e, you could give level 5 fighters a damage bonus equal to their fighter level against all creatures with a CR below 1 when they roll for damage. Make them minion killers.

Level Up has some nice ideas, like treating fighters like rock stars so they get bonuses to persuading commoners, or intimidating creatures low a lower CR, one where they get a free information gathering if they go on a pub crawl etc. I've only ever thought fighters and rangers needed a boost.

5e charisma is a combination of personal magnetism and force of personality that is enhanced by skills. You could dip his str and con and load it onto cha and only train in intimidation.
