    D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Document: 77 Pages, 7 Classes, & More!

The flaws of 5e feel far more manageable to me than 3e did and it feels so much more like 'classic' DnD to than 4e ever did. They are largely just tinkering, none of which you need to apply to keep enjoying the game. Because I started in 1e where about a third of your characters were...

    D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Mastery + Cunning Strike+ Battle Master

It's not the class I worry about, its other classes. And while you say that we can't build the game around broken multiclass combinations is the way to design it, about a third of the changes in the playtest are trying to fix exactly that. No point of fixing them and then breaking a whole load...

    D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Document: 77 Pages, 7 Classes, & More!

If lay on hands is to be a bonus action then it needs to be brought more in line with clerical healing, maybe 1d8+Charisma bonus or 1d8+paladin level, more like fighter's second wind. I've never liked the idea that paladins were more efficient as healers than clerics.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 6: Paladin ... Divine Smite is a Spell now

I've been DMing for 40 years and I think my villains have used counterspell twice. Most villains won't even have it and the few that do won't always choose to use it, especially if the paladin is attacking one of their allies. It's very situational but I doubt it would happen often enough to...

    D&D 5E (2024) UA Ranger (Playtest 6)

Yeah I think my default preference for rangers would be martial abilities for damage and spells for utility, enhancement, summoning Beasts, on environmental control. A spell that conjures arrows has always felt weird. I'd prefer it if it was refluffed as a martial ability using existing...

    D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Mastery + Cunning Strike+ Battle Master

I do think it's arguable that fighters and monks should be able to stack more than one status effect on a single attack at higher levels but I don't think it's a great idea to make that at will at no action cost. I also don't think it's a great idea to allow it via a low cost multiclass dip...

    D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Mastery + Cunning Strike+ Battle Master

Level up splits out pushing and knockdown into different things and allows for pushing more than 5 feet. In that instance, you can see some more combinations, including some with no saves.

D&D 5E (2024) My Proposed Fix for the Fighter

I like most of it. I prefer to keep pushing creatures who are two sizes larger as a special feature of gauntlets of ogre power and girdles of giant strength (the magic items are busted if you just dish out uber strength so I do +2 and +4 more like in 3e). Some of it needs some balancing. I...

    D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Mastery + Cunning Strike+ Battle Master

But consider - riders from weapon mastery, riders from cunning strike, feats, and fighter manoeuvres all applying to the same attack.

    D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Mastery + Cunning Strike+ Battle Master

Because some manoeuvres like tripping attack stomp on feats. Because no action cost at wills might create multiclass cheese. If topple does it anyway then I doubt it would even make the cut unless you want every fighter to have it on every weapon.

    D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Mastery + Cunning Strike+ Battle Master

I toyed with this, making them a bonus action but I think it gets too complicated. I'm starting to think giving fighters a once per round 1d6 damage boost that can be spent at higher levels for something akin to cunning strikes from a limited, themed list would work better to keep the fighter...

    D&D 5E (2024) UA Ranger (Playtest 6)

Maybe they need to update it to you can cast it once per long rest without using a spell slot but the material components are a piece of ammunition for each target. ;-p

    D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Mastery + Cunning Strike+ Battle Master

I think a basic 1d6 damage bonus once per round for fighters that can be added to damage or spent on something else would be a great idea. They should get 3 options at each relevant level. One for control, one to assist allies, one to assist themselves. These should be split into...

D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Masteries too Ubiquitous? New Fighter ability suggestion.

Maybe everyone else except the monk should get 1 weapon mastery at level 2 and a second one at level 5?

D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Masteries too Ubiquitous? New Fighter ability suggestion.

Cunning strikes look really fun but so versatile that it is a bit of a slap in the face for the fighter. Maybe sacrificing only 1d6 is a bit cheap. Weapon masteries are surprisingly fun but mean nothing special to the fighter if everyone else gets similar options. Getting 8 topples in a round...

    D&D 5E (2024) A new idea for Topple

You could allow a wielder to push as normal while wielding the weapon with a +2 DC to any save to avoid being knocked prone and inflicting 1 damage. Then auto prone on a crit.

D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Masteries too Ubiquitous? New Fighter ability suggestion.

Shield master let's you prone enemies as a bonus action. I think topple might end up being downgraded slightly as at will toppling 2 or 3 times each round might turn out to be a bit much. Limiting it to once per round might be enough?

D&D 5E (2024) Weapon Masteries too Ubiquitous? New Fighter ability suggestion.

I do think that fighters need some basic tactical options that help allies. I think they should be able to impose disadvantage on opportunity attacks against them and then at higher levels to do the same for adjacent opportunity attacks against allies.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 6: Rogue and Cunning Strike

They both look like scimitars to me. Long edges for slashing. Ah yes, technically a scimitar and a long curved magical dagger. Does that still count as a precedent for scimitar and shortsword? ;-p

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 6: Rogue and Cunning Strike

So they actually made a reason to not use a rapier? Masteries working as intended? Shortsword and scimitar dual wield sounds sounds like a munchkin combo though. Was there any historical precedent?
