D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Ranger: "Look yon rabbits frolicking in the wan light of sunset" Halfling Bard: "Oh so cute. I love bunnies". Forest Gnome: "Quick everyone, lets move fast, pretend we're in a hurry and whatever you do, don't make eye contact".

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I usually tend to role-play animals like small children and with an alien mindset, so there is some ambiguity about what they mean. But I also include animals that are part faerie animal and are capable of having an extremely articulate conversation (and may in fact be a bit too glad to finally...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Look, to my mind the issue is basically this. Casters have more things they can leverage. There's been a push back against the idea that characters should be looking at their character sheet for options in a pinch and should instead be (what I don't know? Sitting back and waiting for the muse...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

And if you're an Arcane Trickster even though you don't have that many spell slots you really don't need those spell slots for combat. Basically the main thing I used spell slots for in combat were casting Shield (which is of less benefit for a Rogue anyway due to Uncanny Dodge) and the...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

It's very GM dependent though. It's not exactly clear how well the animals can commicate back. Some GMs will play them as able to hold conversations with the gnome, while others will play them as too dumb to really be of any use.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Has anyone played the Pathfinder Kingmaker computer game? Because that's bascially D&D and the very first and most likable companion they give your main character is a Halfling. There's at least two gnomes that feature heavily in that game too.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Honestly, I may be just one data point, but I always replace Drow with something else. If I want evil elves there's much better options like Kobld Press's Shadow Fey.

    D&D 5E (2014) Starting to Hate Hexblades

I believe WotC considered changing "Fighter' to "Warrior' for 3rd edition but chickened out. Shame.

But no Fireball or Magic Missile! These days they might be 'iconic'. Back then we thought they were boring.

Talk to small woodland creatures! Train you own sidekick party of small squirrels.

    D&D 5E (2014) Starting to Hate Hexblades

Here's the basic details of each spell. I'm sure somewhere on the net there must be a full write-up of them, but it didn't come up with a cursory search.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Yes. In comparing Genasi with Halfings or Half-Orcs we need to take into consideration that they are designed to be able to work with a very wide range of classes and concepts. This may make them a better designed race, but it muddies the water in regards to the popularity of the concept...

    D&D 5E (2014) Starting to Hate Hexblades

Really? What about Elf or Elf Fighter/Magic User in OD&D, 1e and 2e? (The Bladesinger comes from 2e.) The arcane/Fighter mix is actually one of the oldest aspects of the game. It has always had the problem (in the Vancian systems) thought that the two halves of the class have kind of sat...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I think there was a critical role character that was a Goliath, which, if so would probably explain why they've lingered in people's consciousness.

I meant Ravenloft. I will correct (Too many portmanteaus).

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

What we should really do is cut out the subraces. If we're cutting out the ability score bonuses they're somewhat redundant anyway as they mostly exist to spread around that extra point or two. Furthermore, if lots of people are playing non PHB races anyway, then the distinction between...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Eh. I don't want to say that Orcs have good lore, especially in D&D, but they're recognisable. Goliaths are just D&D and while other properties have giant like races they don't really intersect with Goliaths. Orcs, beside their Tolkien roots have been present in Earthdawn and Shadowrun, have...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I would personally prefer Goliaths, but I suspect that a well designed and not overly pigeon-holed Orc (not half-orc) design could hold that spot, especially if it came along with good and much improved Orc lore. Nothing else is going to have the recognition and cultural cache.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

The point is not that the data is meaningless. If there were a lot of Half-Orc Wizards despite the fact that they are completely lacking in synerygy it would have been a sign that they were extremly popular. The point is that the data is muddied somewhat and that needs to be taken into...
