D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

The problem with this is: for what setting? Tieflings only got established when they were created for the Planescape settting. Then they were recreated, along with Dragonborn, for the the default 4e setting. Without a setting there's a sort of push/pull to D&D races. They want them to be...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Hmmm. I missed that Goliaths were slightly ahead. I'm actually pleased by that. As for why they are meant to be Barbarians, fluff and history. WotC have always seen the Half-Orc as the iconic Barbarian (it's boring - but that's how it is). I don't think they're good design. But the point is...

All Characters Should be Good at Talking to NPCs

Talking = stupid niche Talking to mercenaries and soldiers Taking to aristocrats and high society Talking to street scum and criminals Talking to farmers and country people Better niches. But the other things is, don't put all the talking stuff on top of one ability score, or underlying...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

And, as I said earlier in the thread, 3rd most popular race for Rogues, which is not surprising given they have aDex bonus and are small. You can't really evalutate the pre-Tashas races without considering what classes they were designed to be 'Iconic' choices for. That's why Half-Orcs can be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

To my mind it's where they intersect that they're most powerful. Arcane Trickster with Disguise Self and Invisibilty and expertise in Stealth. Better to be sneaky and invisible than just sneaky. Better to have Misty Step in your pocket for a way out if somehow you mess up. Unseen Servant or...

Yes I know. But that was the example given.

It's fantasy too, so the big salt deposits might be of magical original. Perhaps created when a legendary sorcerer turned an invading army into pillars of salt.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

If a character has 16 Strength, 8 Con, and 16 Charisma as a Fighter, I would definitely question them. What do they see as their role in the party? At it's heart D&D is a tactical combat game so what do they intend to do in this situation? Are they sure D&D is the game they want to be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

That's why you need to dual wield. I remember being frustrated with my first Rogue until I realised that. (And once I got Uncanny dodge I realised I could afford to sacrifice cunning action and soak a few hits in melee). And then I realised with Arcane Trickster I could get the familiar to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

I tend to feel Fighters are better. Barbarians have an achilles heal in that they are unlikely to get a good Wisdom save (Too MAD). With Fighter you can afford some points in Wisdom and you have the extra ASIs to pick up Resilient Wisdom.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Well yes, but most of those things more undead than alive, and more a sign of creative moribundance than vitality. That's sort of my point. It would be more healthy for creative energy to be invested in new things. James Bond may modernise but can't really escape that it's rather dated and...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Yes. I like 4e, but the same thing could well repeat itself. Those who don't like a particular change objecting, while others see those people as stuck in the past and against progress and modernisation. And here's me on the sidelines thinking: "If you want progress and modernisation, maybe...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

Yeah. Muls don't need a Con bonus. They just need extra hitpoints and advantage on Con saves.

Ok so you don't like them. The internet has taken note.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Yes. This is an issue with them. Granted. But it also makes them more interesting. Nothing goes on forever. Why don't TV series just keep changing with the times and never end? There's only so far you can stretch a concept. The Ship of Theseus is an interesting concept but if replacing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Yes that's a good idea. (And in a featless game I would still use the variant human but give them Resilient for free). Thing is, it's not exactly unlikely that a non-proficent PC has exactly the same save as a farmer. I'm curious about how everyone is always getting Advantage. I'm...
