I have both the Spelljammer and the Planescape physical sets. The Spelljammer set made me not want to run a Spelljammer campaign. It gave me nothing that inspired me. Planescape is genuinely great, though of course I would have liked a bigger setting book without the adventure, WotC knows this...

It’s not about how strong a stun is. I think making fights last longer by stopping players from acting is good for encounter challenge. But the player experience? Very different. Players hate losing angency, having to wait another 20 minutes to take their turn.

In my experience, players hate being stunned a lot. Having to skip their turn is so tilting for them that they rather take additional damage, that makes sense. I actually think this makes the Empyrean stronger, since the previous rider was a paltry DC 15 Con save to stun, when now it is always...

Oh I don't mind, I'm not about white room encounters at all. I was just comparing the monsters with little information. Using the new encounter building rules, you could make a high challenge encounter with this ancient gold dragon and 2 CR15 or 5 CR9. Should be an interesting fight! Already...

Interesting, the A5e Gold dragon is hard to compare, since it has a lot of different tools. However, it looks like the DPR of it is only 134, more than 50 less than what I predict the MM25 will be able to do. I like the A5e one though, looks like fun to run.

So it's very interesting to see that the AC and HP of the Gold Dragon haven't changed. I think 500+ should be pretty normal for a CR20+ monster that is supposed to be able to take on an entire adventuring party. So if we expect the ancient gold to be able to make 3 rend attacks as a Legendary...

I kept using some resistances, so the HP was pitiful, and the party took them down too easy. Never had a monster with too many hit points. But whatever the case, they all hit like a pool noodle...

It's interesting though, I have seen a lot of 3rd party books expand on monster sections. Encounter examples, tactics, loot, each in different amounts or presentation. Do we need more or do some of us want more? Does a beginner DM need more than an experienced DM, or the other way round?

Same here. I think the new DMG guidelines might be better for monster creation, at least for new DM's... I spent SO MUCH TIME making awful monsters that genuinely made my sessions worse. I don't want anyone to experience that.
