D&D General Your Top Tip(s) for Prepping a Published Adventure

I broadly agree with that, which is why I qualified my comment with "Unless it's the point of running that adventure...." If you tell the players you're running Ravenloft, then run a recognizable Ravenloft. Otoh, if you're swapping out Strahd for a penaggalan don't bill it as "Ravenloft", but...

D&D General Your Top Tip(s) for Prepping a Published Adventure

Unless it's the point of running that adventure, why does it need to be "recognizable"? I reskin/ rename/ repurpose things all the time, because I play for fun, not to retell old material.

D&D General Do your players map?

It's been at over 25 years since I played in a group where a player actively mapped, back when we'd finish the adventure then spend hours trying to figure out why the left half of the map was two squares off from the right half. More recently, of course, mapping typically happens on the part of...

D&D 5E (2014) REALLY REALLY BAD DM ADVICE

A full roster of NPCs with names like "X'tunq-ploffits'qo3p" is not in the least bit frustrating for players. Corollary: A full roster of NPCs named "John" is not in the least bit frustrating for players.

    New internet rule

Indeed. No "destroyed" headline is worth its salt without some proper "lamentations" in the article below it.

D&D 5E (2014) REALLY REALLY BAD DM ADVICE

Be sure to have a powerful DMPC accompany the party everywhere and do all the talking to important NPCs. Constantly change homebrew rules and rulings from session to session. (It is most important to do this just when newer players are starting to understand the system.)

D&D 5E (2014) Poll: What D&D setting do you want to have an official 5E book?

Voted Dark Sun. My next choices would have been Mystara and Al-Qadim.

D&D General Generic: is it Good or Bad?

When I hear "generic," I more or less interpret it to mean "free of canon requirements". In other words, it can be slotted in most anywhere with little headache. I suppose that might mean uninteresting, but I don't think that's necessarily the case. A work can be "generic" and still be...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC Delays New D&D Book Announcement

Agreed. This probably isn't really my cup of tea, but I'm looking at this as an educational opportunity to teach myself about the CR world, so maybe I can tap some of those new players getting sucked in every week. ;)

Critical Role The New D&D Book Is 'The Explorer's Guide to [Critical Role's] Wildemount!' By Matt Mercer

Admittedly, my heart sank when I first saw this a little while ago, because I have zero interest in Critical Role and know exactly nothing about the show, the setting, the actors, etc. However, upon reflection... This might well prove to be a tidy way to learn the basics without slogging...

What is your favorite thing about Star Wars?

I voted "Setting", but only because I'm willfully re-interpreting that to include the worlds/cultres/languages and so forth, but also the tech, the politics, the mysticism. Altogether it defines a whole aesthetic that appeals more and more to me as I've grown older, even if the relentless...

    D&D 5E (2014) How/when Do You Level?

Voted my preference, which is milestones. Interesting. I get the opposite impression, tbh. IIRC, using XP awards with default rests and recommended XP/per day in the DMG, a party levels from 1 to 20 in a little over one month. (I'm new to 5e, though, so perhaps I did the numbers wrong?)...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you play D&D if you knew there would be no combat?

No, but only because the GM is unknown. I'd certainly play a non-combat game with an unknown GM in a system designed for that, but not in a combat-focused system like D&D. (And of course, I'd play with a known GM!)

D&D General Hilarious typos in D&D books

As I recall, * shake * shake * zip * is the somatic component for prestidigitation, so it's really not a problem.
