WOTC: Making a statement is not making a promise

I don't think anyone is claiming it's deceptive marketing (or at least I'm not), but it's a terrible way to generate good PR. It's funny that you chose Windows Vista, actually, because in my industry it is regarded as one of the largest PR disasters in recent memory, largely because of those...

WOTC: Making a statement is not making a promise

For what it's worth, I work for a major computer and consumer electronics company, whose products are typically highly hyped and anticipated. All of out external communications are very very careful controlled because of exactly this issue: if we mention anything we plan to do in the future...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder RPG Beta Release is available!

I think the difference in this case is that they can choose whether they want to pay (to support the company) or just use it for free. Anyone who's paying is doing so because they not only want the product but because they actively want to support it.

    Changeover poll

I'm not sure that's a useful statistic. To use myself as an example, I don't like 4e. Tried it at the FLGS, didn't like it. But one of my good friends plans to run an "intro" game that I'll probably play in just because I like to have fun with my friends. But I have no intention of buying...

Racially diverse artwork in D&D...does it influence you?

While I could get behind a desire for more diverse art, I'd like to qualify it: I want to see more realistically nations and cultures in fantasy settings. That means, among other things, realizing that there is internal diversity within populations other than Western European, that there are...

Should NPCs Have to Follow the Same Rules as PCs?

Couldn't have said it better. Having separate base rules for PCs and NPCs is pretty much a showstopper for me in terms of buying an RPG.

Racially diverse artwork in D&D...does it influence you?

To go off on a tangent, I don't take much notice of the ethnicities portrayed in RPG artwork, I do feel strongly about how cultures are portrayed in settings. I strongly dislike it when a setting has, say, a dozen nations or cultures derived from medieval Western Europe, and then has a single...

    4e D&D GSL Live

NOTE: I Am Not A Lawyer! Of course games can be copyrighted, but it only covers the text of the game books, not the underlying concepts. Here's a relevant quote, taken from this ruling: The idea/expression dichotomy is central to US copyright and patent law. Copyright applies to the...

    4e D&D GSL Live

Actually, I don't think that's quite correct. If you look at Section 6.3, the punishment for re-publishing something back under the OGL is having your GSL license terminated. So, in the case that your license was terminated for other reasons, they can't exactly re-terminate it to punish you...

What D&D can learn from spaghetti sauce

I wasn't making a serious assertion. I wouldn't presume to without having real data. I was rather offering an illustrative anecdote to suggest that there might be something there. Did I ever say that it had to be a mechanical preference? More importantly, neither you nor I (unless you're...

What D&D can learn from spaghetti sauce

I didn't mean to imply that it was a majority of the population, but I am not alone in thinking that it's a noticeable chunk either. See companies like Paizo and Green Ronin who are willing to bet on being able to capture the non-4e-likers with their own systems. I don't see how your posit...

What D&D can learn from spaghetti sauce

It's notable enough to at least a few game companies (Paizo, Green Ronin) who are making their own products to target that market.

What D&D can learn from spaghetti sauce

You can, of course, watch the video that I linked to in my first post, which is also a better recounting of the story. But, for reference, it was the Prego brand, manufactured by Campbell's.

What D&D can learn from spaghetti sauce

Yesterday on the train ride home, I was musing about some comments I'd read around here about how the changes in 4e were in response to preferences noted in customer surveys, etc. I think the particular comment I read said that people usually identified finding new magic items as something fun...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

First, I said thematically. There was certainly mechanical variation. My issue was that that was the ONLY difference. No, cleave and shield bash were ok. I still don't know how a reaping strike differs from just, y'know, hitting them with your sword. It actually seemed worse, to me, with...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

I've read through a friend's copy of the books, and played in a 4 hour demo today. Here are my thoughts based on those: - Non-caster at-will powers are silly. When the fighter have five different abilities that all boil down to "I smack him with my sword," the choice between them becomes...

Pathfinder 1E Monte Cook joins Pathfinder team

I agree with the view that most people are not extremely picky about backwards compatibility. Where I draw the line is that I need to be able to run, say, a fight with PF characters and PF NPCs. I don't care that the power levels will differ slightly. I can add an extra mook or three to even...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Alpha "crunch" discussion

I think an important point out that, while Pathfinder is designed to be backwards compatible, it is not designed to be strictly so. We have to accept that there will be some differences, so there will be some areas of incompatibility. However, the intent is to keep the divergence small. As an...
