    Sense-of-Wonder Travel Campaign?

RangerWickett posted this in the Grand To-Do List thread. Not wanting to hijack his thread, I'm pulling it out here for discussion. I too have always wanted to either play or DM a game like that. The Explorer's Handbook particularly made me want to run it. So my question to ENWorld: Have...

    Best gaming store?

Yeah, that place is amazing. I stopped by this past D&D game day. To start with, the gaming area (which is HUGE) was crammed. They'd moved several of the board game displays to make room for a few extra tables, which were also full. The retail section was jammed. Outside, there were tables...

    The Grand To-Do List

I would love to play in that game! In fact, I've been wanting to do this since the Explorer's Handbook came out.

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

As one of the people who is frequently labelled as having a grognard-ish outlook on 4e, I think the whole classification based on grognard-ism is bunk. I'm 21, and started playing just after 3e came out. I just happen to like the game as I currently play it more than what they've been showing...

    More about wizards by kunadam

Interesting. I like most of it, though there are a few parts I disagree with: - I'm not a fan of having a separate class for necromancy. Wizards are wizards to me. - I think I'd switch the associations of wand and staff, just based on my personal tastes.

My situation is exactly like yours. Couldn't have put it better.

    As Editions progress, are homebrews...

No, his response was that the insertion of flavored feat names in 4e makes it harder to homebrew. Some of us don't have players with perfect recall.

    As Editions progress, are homebrews...

I very much agree with BryonD. As I see it, there are two kinds of core fluff: 1) The kind that needs non-intrusive editing. This includes things like the Greyhawk gods in 3e, the Bigby spells, etc. Renaming them or dropping them has serious ramifications for dealing with my players. If...

    Defining its own Mythology

I don't, except when they make the implied setting so integral that I have to work to remove it, rather than just ignoring it as I could in 3.5e.

Dragonborn - will you ban them?

Depends on the setting. Planescape can absorb them pretty easily, but I'm not sure I would use them in Eberron. My current homebrew would actually absorb them pretty well: The dwarves, exiled from their traditional home, have been taking over the homeland of the lizardmen over the last...

    Just a couple of questions

I actually have a homebrew that the Dragonborn would fit into well by this very method: The dwarves, exiled from their traditional home, having been taking over the homeland of the lizardmen over the last several centuries. The whole interaction has a lot in common with the European...

    Just a couple of questions

You're right, I can modify the game to be whatever I want. BUT this isn't just a game for me. I have 5 (sometimes 6) players whose command of the rules is sometimes shaky at best. Not all of them own their own copies of the books. More than half wouldn't know the meaning of any of their...

    On The Horrible Naming

Well, from my New Oxford American: cleave (verb): 1. split or sever (something), esp. along a natural line or grain : the large ax his father used to cleave wood for the fire. 2. split (a molecule) by breaking a particular chemical bond. 3. make a way through (something) forcefully, as if by...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Mechanically, this looks like a very good approach. I'm not convinced by the flavor of some of the smites, but not of them look hopeless.

    Defining its own Mythology

That's definitely not what I'm trying to say. I haven't even read a lot of the authors point at as the inspiration of D&D. The only thing I'm saying is that the kind of game I play right now in 3.5e (BTW, I only started playing with 3e, so it's nothing ultra-grognard-y) seems to be excluded...

    Defining its own Mythology

I have more than one point of contention with this, but I'm only going to address the one that's truly on-topic: If you think I have been implying that I've been playing the game the same way for the last 30 years, well, you're wrong. :) I actually didn't start playing until 3e, as did all...

    Defining its own Mythology

I just went back and re-read the entire thread, to make sure I hadn't missed something. I assume you mean when he said: "Seems to me that 4E is marketed to people who actually don't like D&D. This is just wrong." While I certainly think it could be better phrased to be less incendiary, I...

    Defining its own Mythology

The difference is between saying something negative about the topic (which, while potentially not popular, is a valid contribution to a discussion) and saying something negative about the speakers. Telling those of us who are discouraged about 4e's flavor that we're a "good riddance" is a...
