D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

The new surprise rules are so much better than the old ones. Giving one side an entire free round is insanely overpowered

D&D 5E (2024) Agonizing Blast and Green Flame Blade

I don't see any reasoning for why it wouldn't add your charisma modifier to both creatures. It adds charisma modifier to the spell's damage rolls, and you roll damage against each creature (assuming level 5+). Similarly, Booming Blade ought to let you add the charisma modifier on both...

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

Yeah I don't buy it that any deficiencies in 5.5e are due to it being rushed. They could've had an infinite amount of time and it would've turned out approximately the same.

D&D 5E (2024) Ways to attack with advantage by level (with all the fine print)

In the Equipment section, Rope has a specific Utilize Action that you can bind an unwilling creature if they are Grappled, Incapacitated, or Restrained. Binding them requires a DC10 sleight of hand check, and then they can break out with either a DC20 Athletics or DC15 Acrobatics check. While...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rant about Forced Movement

Rules as Written, your players are correct. The distinction is very confusing so it might change in 5.5e (I have no idea) For Sickening Radiance I would suspect it is an intentional design decision to prevent PCs from pinballing the boss into and out of the area to quickly generate 6 stacks of...

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

I voted a 1 because I strongly dislike WotC but love DnD, and my dislike of WotC has no impact on my enjoyment of DnD. If I was required to pay money to WotC in order to play DnD I would likely feel differently, but fortunately it is very easy to play DnD without paying a penny to WotC. The...

D&D 5E (2024) Is weapon mastery from your class tied to the mastery property or to individual weapons?

A scimitar is not a kind of weapon either, it is a weapon (or more specifically a "martial weapon"). I think you're probably right but the syntax is not defined in the book and it is open to be interpreted either way. In particular the wording on Fighter (which is what I was initially...

D&D 5E (2024) Is weapon mastery from your class tied to the mastery property or to individual weapons?

What is a "kind of weapon" though? Is "scimitar" a kind of weapon? Or are "nick weapons" a kind of weapon? The book does not define this term so it is left up to the reader to interpret. I can't imagine that the difference actually matters except in very rare cases, but I suppose it would...

D&D General Eldritch Smite vs Paladin Smite (plus a house rule already)

I would change the wording to "Once per turn on your turn" to disallow smiting on reaction attacks. Otherwise yeah this is what WotC should've done in the first place. Or changing it to say "Once per turn when you take the Attack action" could work as well (this allows smiting on Readied...

    D&D 5E (2014) Radically shrinking stat blocks

Combining attacks into one line is usually not going to work. It works there because they do the same damage but that usually isn't the case. Anyways I give it an A+ based solely on putting CR in huge font at the top.

D&D 5E (2024) Best fix for conjure minor elemental?

My answer is change the scaling to be +1d8 per level instead of +2d8 per level. I prefer this answer because it allows the spell to still be powerful, while not scaling to obscenely game breaking numbers. My rationale: The obvious spell to compare Conjure Minor Elementals (CME) to is Spirit...

D&D 5E (2024) Greatweapon fighting style? Is this another joke? Did everyone at WotC failed elementary school math classes?

That's not a bad method either, definitely ends up being a buff over the 2014 version. Maybe too much but I kinda doubt it. I was aiming for keeping the power in line with 2014, which admittedly was on the weak side. There is something to be said though for raising your damage floor, and most...

D&D 5E (2024) Are single class martials still going to be viable in 2024?

Doesn't sound like you do, making quotes about how "comparison if the thief of joy". There's no wrong way to enjoy DnD, and for many people, optimizing their character is what makes the game fun. You only get to play DnD for what, a few hours a week max if schedules hold? There's no limit...

D&D 5E (2024) Are single class martials still going to be viable in 2024?

Ok yeah fun > all, but what if someone finds it fun to play a powerful character? (this is most people, in my experience)

D&D 5E (2024) Greatweapon fighting style? Is this another joke? Did everyone at WotC failed elementary school math classes?

My homebrew modification on this is to up the minimum equal to 4 for d8's, 5 for d10's, 6 for d12's. Still ain't all that great but at least it's not drastically nerfed from the 2014 version. And even if that isn't mathematically optimal, it can be pretty decent in practice to up your damage...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 PHB Release Hype Thread

Most excited: Monk buffs (and stunning strike nerfs), Rogue buffs, Origin feats (bye variant human!), Dual Wielding buffs, new Grappling, new Wild Shape, GWM/SS changes Not excited: Conjure Minor Elementals, new Backgrounds, Paladins nerfed into oblivion

D&D 5E (2024) Can characters change fighting styles

That seems like a rather nitpicky interpretation of the wording to conclude that "you may replace a fighting style you know" doesn't apply anymore because they are "fighting style feats" now. You could be correct though! As always it will be a table by table decision for each DM I could see...

    D&D 5E (2014) New class niche?

Warlock is definitely a contender for best melee DPS in 5.5e. They might not be number one but they're in the running for sure

    D&D 5E (2014) New class niche?

Agreed. 5.5e Warlock is massively buffed in terms of being an actual Gish. Hexblade patron is nearly obsolete because you get their offensive kit from a single invocation while still getting to pick another Patron that supports spellcaster capabilities. You lose out on armor/shield...
