    D&D 5E (2024) Non-Human Party - Campaign help!

Why would a village be only humans though? Surely Tabaxis, Orcs, Elves, Firlbogs, and Fairies would live in villages too and have the same tie to saving a village as Human PCs would Anyways that's unrelated to the point of the thread and I only ask since it looks like you got some good...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

100%. Personally I hate traps and think they're boring gameplay best left in the 80's, but it's still a legitimate playstyle for tables who enjoy old school nitty gritty dungeon crawling, and Mage Hand completely negates that aspect of gameplay. Sure the DM can be "creative" and make...

    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

Totally agree with all these points. Limiting cantrip casts per day just adds needless stuff for players to track and probably doesn't even address whatever the perceived issue is with them in the first place If you want to run gritty realism DnD but certain cantrips (plus low level spells)...

    D&D 5E (2024) Non-Human Party - Campaign help!

Thread already has a bunch of helpful plot ideas, I have nothing better to add but I am super curious how motivating human characters somehow differs from motivating a party of non-human characters. Every DnD party I've ever seen was mostly non-human PCs and I've never seen any adjustments to...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Pointy Hat’s Battlefield Actions

Yeah same, I frequently use the environment to do similar effects to some of his examples, but I really love how he just simplifies it as "Boss starts the thing at end of his turn, resolves the thing at beginning of his turn, PCs figure it out or get hit". Makes the design much easier for the...

    D&D General Hands slot economy

I just use the 5.5e Rules As Written for holding and swapping objects in your hands. They are rather lenient if you are just trying to do something remotely realistic like switch weapons in combat, but they do prevent obviously silly stuff like your examples of climbing with a greatsword in...

    D&D General Hands slot economy

5e has strict* rules on what can be held and swapped in your hands during combat. *Strictly defined anyways - they are rather lenient in terms of how many weapon swaps you can do in a turn, but the rules are at least clearly defined I'm not familiar with older editions, but I'd say start with...

Project Sigil 90% Of D&D’s Project Sigil Team Laid Off

I'm wondering this myself but then it also explains why they released it when it was glitchy, poorly documented, and obviously nowhere near ready to be used by anyone who wasn't already a master at using similar VTT's. The release seemed to go really poorly (at least from what I could tell)...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

Good question - I don't track them at all so I'm sort of talking hypothetically there. I would think though that by strict Rules As Written you would need to pay gold for mundane items, track them on your character sheet, include them in encumbrance calculations, etc. If any thought or...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

Definitely a valid concern, but I think it'll be tough to find a slope more slippery than low level magical spells and cantrips that completely negate the need for just about any adventuring equipment to solve problems. Eliminating the need to track mundane items gives Martial characters a...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

Magical ammunition, yes. Regular ammunition, absolutely not. Same with rations, rope, basically any non-magical adventuring equipment - if your character probably would've thought to bring it then just say you have it without tracking anything.

D&D General Why did you have to cancel/reschedule your most recent session?

The point of the "on call" players is you find the type of people who would like to play DnD, have the schedule availability that they generally could play most weeks, but they don't want to commit every Saturday (or whatever day) do playing DnD. So now they're able to be a full-time member of...

D&D General Why did you have to cancel/reschedule your most recent session?

This is an awesome breakdown and almost perfectly mirrors what I was attempting to do in my latest group although I didn't think thru the logistics are thoroughly as you lay out here. I was aiming for a 7+1 with a min table size of 4, but never found any reliable "on call" folks, and only 2 of...

D&D 5E (2014) How many times in an adventuring day does your party spellcaster cast a cantrip spell?

I also hate how Guidance is disruptive to the flow of play. I try to minimize the disruption by just saying that anyone who can cast the spell automatically gets +1d4 to all skillchecks out of combat if they aren't running another concentration spell, and then for other party members they have...

D&D General What Does New Coke Tell Us About Designing for D&D

Seems like you would have meant Red Sox here? Yankees have been tormenting and destroying dreams of Red Sox fans for generations, but they don't have any type of rivalry with the White Sox

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing and ability score drain?

It could work ok if the PCs have someone who can cast Greater Restoration, or the DM plants a conveniently available NPC not too far away who can be convinced to cast the spell. I'd still stick with Rules as Written, but there would be ways to pull this off without it being permanent

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing and ability score drain?

Sounded like they were saying no leveling period, and potentially even losing class abilities for their existing levels. Obviously that's all just homebrew modifications and not the Rules As Written so the DM can always homebrew any tweaks they want

D&D 5E (2014) How many times in an adventuring day does your party spellcaster cast a cantrip spell?

Depends on the party composition but there are a few cantrips that easily get cast over 20 times per day outside combat. Shillelagh, Mage Hand, and Guidance are generally assumed to cast constantly to keep their duration refreshed without the player needing to mention casting it. Dancing...
