    D&D General Dmg previews up

My prediction is that the 2024 DMG will not have variant rules. Historically, most DMGs never had variant rules. The only reason they were in the 2014 DMG is because the explicit promise of 5E was that it would support the playstyle of your favorite edition. At that time, WOTC was justifiably...

D&D General The 2024 PHB is the best Player's Handbook ever

I don't believe you're engaging with my post in good faith.

D&D 5E (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

I have players who I've been gaming with for YEARS who I think are going to struggle with weapon mastery. It's not just a beginner issue. And I say that as someone who digs weapon mastery!

D&D General The 2024 PHB is the best Player's Handbook ever

I'm 20 sessions into my campaign for Eyes of the Stone Thief. 13th Age is an excellent system. I've been raiding it for ideas for years, and I'm glad to be finally playing it outright. But I find the layout and art of the book to be much lower quality than any recent version of D&D -- likely due...

D&D General The 2024 PHB is the best Player's Handbook ever

I don't think that's a fair characterization. Rules are the most important part of my overall enjoyment of a game. But in the case of D&D, they're spread out across 3 books. The one book we have in hand is great. I hope the other two are just as strong.

D&D General The 2024 PHB is the best Player's Handbook ever

I don't feel that 5E or 5R is dumbed down, just properly organized.

D&D General The 2024 PHB is the best Player's Handbook ever

Welcome back! I played the game in my teens, fell out of it in college, dabbled during my 30s, and got back into it as a way of connecting with old friends when my kids were born. I just turned 50. I've played over 200 sessions of 5E and think it's a great game.

D&D General The 2024 PHB is the best Player's Handbook ever

I'm not claiming the 2024 rules are the best version of Dungeon & Dragons ever. Although I believe they probably are, it's a matter of personal taste. Reasonable people can disagree. But there is no doubt the 2024 PHB is the best Player's Handbook ever published. Introducing the game: The...

Pretty! If I was playing in person more, I would be tempted to pick this up.

Fascinating to see a contemporaneous review of Ravenloft, now widely considered one of the very, very best adventures ever.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

So I guess this means no more layoffs, right?

D&D Beyond Releases New Free D&D Adventure Featuring 1980s Cartoon Characters

Monster stat blocks! Formatting is still a bit more complicated than I need, but definitely a refinement. More interesting is the design. Each monster has a clear hook that I can discern without much effort. For example, the bugbear grapples. The bullywug leaps and poisons. I get it. The players...

D&D 5E (2024) DMs what do you think of the new PHB?

Mike runs two games concurrently. I believe he is running Level Up in one campaign and Tales of the Valiant in the other.

D&D 5E (2024) DMs what do you think of the new PHB?

Browsing my hardcopy of the new 2024 book, it feels like this time they went back to 4E and pulled in some of the better ideas. Bloodied condition, tactical combat (but without requiring a grid), keywords, and strong visual presentation. I like it.

D&D General Stuff 5E Did Right

I totally agree with Zard's original post. I've played over 250 games of 5E (mostly as a DM) including a 1-20 level campaign. While there were challenges along the way, it worked. It just worked. It's my favorite edition of the game. And browsing my physical copy of the 2024 edition, it's now...

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Talks AI Usage in D&D [UPDATED!]

I'm a forever DM, but last year one of my players volunteered to run a Twilight 2000 4E game. It lasted 9 months. Great time. He used a lot of AI generated art to introduce characters and locations. It was awesome. Definitely something for me to emulate. So I'm not threatened by what I'm hearing...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

Looking for the simplest version of D&D to teach my young children how to play. Finally settled on Shadowdark. Grabbed the Monster Overhaul for good measure.

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Sixteen sessions into my 13th Age campaign. Eyes of the Stone Thief expanded to cover all 10 levels. Five player characters now at 3rd level. I've not been posting regular updates, but we are playing on the regular. The characters have fought off a band of mysterious assassins who took over an...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Session 61 and 62 of my Neverwinter/Sword Coast campaign. Drow evoker wizard, human genie warlock, half orc vengeance paladin at 11th. These two short sessions were an extended battle sequence against the minions of the sinister nobles that have seized control of the paladin's home town...

    D&D 5E (2024) Another D&D 2024 Monster Preview: The Kuo-Toa!

I like what I see. Feels like the format has taken a lot of inspiration from Level Up.
