    The Playtest Agreement

Agreed. I am not angry about this, but I do think mentioning some of these issues with the agreement as perceived by the end user is important. I have said that WotC is well within their rights to do what they want with the playtest agreement, it doesn't mean it makes sense and that I have to...

    The "Smell Test"

Seeing some mechanics in action are simply the rubber meeting the pavement to use an analogy. Take Advantage/Disadvantage. It sounds cool. But I am anxious to see how it works when you are actually getting to roll the extra dice. Is it fun? Is it annoying in some cases? I can think about the...

    An open letter to WoTC

Designed initially, yes. The re-lease though was already seeing more people trying to use smartphones at the table and such and lower powered netbooks as well. I've said before, though they might not have wanted to design for the mobile market or low powered device market at the time, they...

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

My initial reaction was this as well. Still haven't seen it in actual play, but as I was thinking, in PbP's I frequently describe a miss as a glancing blow off the armor or some such. Given that I describe it as that, it stands to reason there could have been some damage caused. Now enough...

    Is this WotC's pipe dream?

I do not see myself switching from Pathfinder to D&D Next, though I do like several things in D&D Next. I think if I was to switch from Pathfinder it would be to something like Dragon Age or maybe Goodman Game's new game (though I need to look at that one a little closer too).

D&D 5E (2014) Who is planning on changing their existing games over to 5e?

It is still really, really early into the playtest for me to make any type of decision. Right now, though I do see some elements I like, I am unlikely to change from my system of choice. With that said, I don't see myself as likely to shy away from the next version of D&D if it continues...

Under what conditions would you give advantage/disadvantage?

Yep - that would be my ruling as well. Agreed. Openness can be a good thing.

    The Playtest Agreement

Oh, I am nearly sure it is the lawyers that brought that on. But again whether is be the lawyers, the designers at WotC or whomever, it does not change the fact that this is being poorly perceived by a portion of the gaming community. A portion that seems to be growing (portion as in gamers that...

So the playtest is out: What do you think? The EN World poll!

I went with the meh option, though it does tend towards the positive side. A couple of the things I did like and there are some I didn't. I do take it as a positive sign after 4e, but not sure it is enough to draw me back to D&D. I am looking forward to seeing it evolve as the playtests continue.

    The "Smell Test"

I identify with Pathfinder, but chose 3.x for the poll and went with a good first impression. I don't like everything in the playtest so far, but it at least seems in the same ballpark at this moment. We'll see how things change as the tests continue. With that said, I am not sure I have seen...

    More concerns over hit points

Random rolling doesn't bother me if that is what everyone else in my group is doing. Shoot, just rolled hit points for my level up to 4th on my Pathfinder and rolled a 1. Eh, the character will live, not as cool as rolling an 8, but still - really not a big deal. If random rolling really is a...

One word that will fix what's wrong with DNDN

And this would be my concern over modularity. I may have missed it and it certainly way early in the process to even know, but have they hinted at whether modules are going to be included in the core rulebook as chapters or is it supplements I need to buy after getting the core rules? Or perhaps...

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

Cool - Your last sentences just confirm we have different play styles. There isn't anything wrong with that! Hopefully the module system in D&D Next will be able to accommodate both of our play styles.

Under what conditions would you give advantage/disadvantage?

Since they don't exist as of yet, I am not sure how I would grant advantage on an attack I don't get to make. Am I misunderstanding what you are after with this one?

    Advantages / Disadvantages

I agree with this. If you are standing in deep water, sure you can use your great sword, though at disadvantage. This is a great way to keep the rules relatively simple and have a mechanic to apply a penalty to any number of situations that come up.

One word that will fix what's wrong with DNDN

I will agree that the parts I have taken issue with for the most part could be fixed via a "module". With that said, advertising for games might be a bit like it was in the latter 3.x days where DMs picked and choosed which resources were allowed ending up in long lists of allowed books and...

    Save or suck Medusa petrification

A planned rust monster encounter would be fine though, right? You would just rather not see a rust monster as a random encounter?

    The Playtest Agreement

Onerous? No. Probably not. A disappointment? Yes. They should have included this in the agreement itself and not via the FAQ. See, I was one that read the agreement prior to downloading. I understand they have interests to protect and a delicate balance between letting the public have access...

    Looking Good

    Save or suck Medusa petrification

I don't mind SoD in my games, though I do like for games that use SoD to have some form of action point or hero point mechanic. To me it offers the way out if the rolls are going really bad without having to tweak a lot of spells to "lighten" them up a bit. Of course a critter could still hit...
