At Will abilities - no healing among the list, should there be?

Agreed! In my opinion it is boring. I like my characters to have some sense of risk. I like resource depletion as the game day moves on so I feel some sense of did we come in properly prepared. I enjoy that - both as a player and as a GM. I don't want to have to throw incredibly powerful...

"For a more old school experience..."

This. The playtest is to test the core functionality. I am sure we will see more layers later on as time goes on. They just want to make sure they have the core mechanics in place that the game will build off of at this point.

    Advantages / Disadvantages

MMI is more of a GM issue than a rules issue. It varies from GM to GM as to how big of an issue it is, but you cannot codify everything that is going to happen in an RPG game. Attempting to do so simply results in an overly complex set of rules that ends up with you spending more time looking up...

    Save or suck Medusa petrification

Oh I agree. That would not be a lot of fun. I still think this is less a result of the rules and more dependent on the style of game the DM runs. I am confident I could run ToH in PbP format and not have it turn into a paranoid, inch by inch, mind-numbing exploration.

    Save or suck Medusa petrification

We played ToH with 3.5 rules and it was awesome! Our group had a good time with it and it was very, very deadly. Sometimes it isn't the rules that are the issue it is the style of the DM of the game. Or even the group that plays the game. These things can't be fixed by the rules.

Quick question: does the prohibition on online play affect your playtest?

The agreement that people accept does not prohibit online play, the FAQ however says it is not allowed. They are considering playing over Skype a form of playing online. From the Playtest FAQ:

    AoOs?

Yep - lack of an AoO mechanic makes reach much less fun.

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

Yes, something more akin to this seems like the compromise I would be looking for. A night's rest is still a great chance to get a good chunk of HP back, but isn't a sure thing.

    Save or suck Medusa petrification

Exactly. Trying to craft spells, special abilities and such in a manner that keeps anyone from being victim of a bad roll leads to complex and cumbersome rules. Build the spells and special abilities the way that make the most sense and let an action point mechanic help alleviate a really poor...

    AoOs?

Yeah, it would be nice to find the compromise between these two. 3.x has feats and stuff to help with mobility, but I seem to recall they were long and involved feat chains. So not sure feats/powers would be a way to help one truly be mobile if you so chose or not. Thanks for the additional...

    Long Rest Poll

I voted no, only because I do not like them as written. I am good with increased healing after 8 hours of rest. But guaranteed full hit points restored after a single night's rest? Not so much. I think there needs to be a happy medium.

D&D 5E (2014) Played our first D&D Next Session - Questions and Impression

I hope this to be the case. I do suspect it is easier to release without that rule and just see what happens. We all know what happens with AoO's in the game. Let's test it without and see what folks say. I've played without before and am not a fan of not having AoO's, but this is a good way to...

Quick question: does the prohibition on online play affect your playtest?

Yes. This affects my plans for playtesting. The most viable option for my group to playtest was to do it via Google Hangouts and TableTop Forge. Partially because one of our former group members was interested in playing 1000's of miles away. The other due to our schedules. We would have been...

    Run It

Agreed. Running it is the what they intended us to do with it. While I have enjoyed the theoretical debate on a couple of topics I really want to see how this thing plays! Now if only they'd let us run it via VTT.... :.-(

    AoOs?

We play gridless a lot (3.x/Pathfinder) and we don't have trouble with AoO's or flanking in our games. In our most current game I am playing a character where flanking is sort of important, I just listen to the description of the combat, ask the GM real quick if I can maneuver into flanking and...

Yeah - I had to snag mine bright and early before the chickens were up.

    AoOs?

Did you like it this way or find the movement without repercussion style a downside? I like AoO's and like to see them included. In Pathfinder Beginner Box where AoO's are not present I ran into situations similar to the ones you described. It was not a good thing in my opinion. Subjective...

Any one feel there is simply not enough to go on?

If they want to know how encounters play out, how combat works, how spells and saves work and skill checks work you can do that with the pre-gens. Trying to dig into leveling up and where the bonuses come from detracts from what they want to know now - how did encounters and core mechanics work...
