Sell Me On A Chase Mechanic

I have heard many good things about Hot Pursuit, but I have never picked it up. I have played with Pathfinder's Chase Rules that someone linked to earlier. They can be fun with the right amount of prep. I also have posted a sample winter scene chase in an urban environment as well as an example...

D&D 5E (2014) How are people currently feeling about 5e?

I am still cautiously optimistic. That optimism took a bit of a hit with the departure of Monte Cook, but we'll see how things pan out. Looking forward to seeing the open play test materials next week.

    Are feats selections too limited?

I think there are too many feats in the game as well. One of the things I recall early on with Pathfinder was the breath of fresh air it felt like with only feats from the Core Rulebook in the early days. I think the APG as a whole was a really strong book as well, not sure all the feats are...

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

There are certainly many more web technologies to choose from than just Flash or Silverlight. Keldryn mentions several of the alternatives in his post earlier. The business case is for flexibility. Phones just being one example of where the ability to be flexible could pay off (and now with...

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

Yes. Definitely. Sort of like Apple fans are now with Silverlight? Agreed.

Did you sign up to be a part of gaming history?

Yeah, I can't see an open play test being released under an NDA. I mean what's the point? As far as copying the game or releasing a derivative I suspect it will simply be more akin to a EULA with the standard disclaimer included as in any game book I buy at the bookstore today.

Did you sign up to be a part of gaming history?

I signed up. At this point not expecting any special emails since it is going to be an open play test now.

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

I would have put Flash in the same boat as Silverlight from the get go. Another proprietary technology that may or may not play well with devices you would like to see your product on. People choosing the tech at the time would already know iOS didn't support flash and for mobile platforms that...

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

Very true. Still, when choosing technology one should look for flexibility to be sure you don't paint yourself into a corner if possible. Also, smart phones were already starting to make a presence at the gaming table for quick lookups and such. The first iPhone was released in 2007. Given...

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

Though DDI didn't switch to using Silverlight until late 2010, right?

Beyond the encounter: rules for pacing and downtime.

I am just not sure if you can codify these things. This strikes me as one of those cases that by putting rules to manage them you stifle or handcuff the GM. Now the players know, "well that kobold dungeon is only going to restock X traps per day, so we wait two days and then go in again."...

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

I agree with a lot of your responses, so I snipped them and am simply agreeing as well that hindsight makes this a lot easier to critique them on. And this is the important thing. Regardless of past technological platform decisions, they need to put some attention towards tablet users...

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

I could believe there was less work in a conversion. I am not that familiar with the back end to comment much on what may or may not have been required in conversion. The thing is, the path of least resistance is not always the best choice. When looking at changing technologies there is a...

The biggest thing that sticks out most is the lack of Silverlight support on the iPad.

    D&D 5E (2014) The shape of DDI for 5e

I never really understood their decision to go Silverlight, especially with the rise of tablets at the gaming table. At this point though I am not sure how much work it would be to convert it to a more flexible setup. I suspect if the conversion to a broader technology were to take a...
