With 5e here, what will 4e be remembered for?

Because for me, this isn't an argument. I'm not trying to "win". I was responding to his post with more detail about my opinion. I'm not trying to change his opinion or even disagree with him, so I acknowledged there are other viewpoints. Sorry if I didn't communicate that, but that's what I...

With 5e here, what will 4e be remembered for?

DMs narrative: "The orc cuts you across the chest with his black blade. At the sight of your blood, the horde howls with excitement." Warlord's mechanic: "Buck up camper!" (hit points return to max) DM's narrative: "Uh..you feel better, turns out it was just a scratch...again." This has...

With 5e here, what will 4e be remembered for?

This. But also choosing powers, paragon paths, skills, etc, became difficult and time consuming. Part of it is that with the DNDInsider subscription, we had easy and cheap access to far more options than in any earlier edition, including many new classes and races, and yes, even more feats...

D&D 5E (2014) What Exactly is Bounded Accuracy?

Here is the official explanation. It's old, but the basic ideas are there. http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4ll/20120604%EF%BB%BF And here's an updated third party blog post that does a good job of explaining it in the context of the new rules...

D&D 5E (2014) Rules Discussion: Somatic Components and Restrained

This has been an educational thread for me. I found your initial ruling fair enough; I would have done the opposite and just allowed it without penalty. But on reading this thread, I think I was too lenient and I agree with your final conclusion. Thinking along the lines of "what's good for...

With 5e here, what will 4e be remembered for?

4th for me was good, bad and ugly, all IMO of course: Good: Roles encouraged teamwork in combat. Monster creation was simple and elegant. Encounters were fun to design, run and play. Tactical gameplay was well done. Bad: Powers for every class took it too far. Theater of the mind gameplay...

    D&D 5E (2014) Thaumaturgy Cantrip.

Perfect cantrip IMO. Not really directly useful in combat, but it sparks the imagination and adds fun and flair; can be played seriously or for fun, lots of variety in its effect.

This Monster Manual goes to 11.

D&D 5E (2014) We Played 5th Edition for the First Time Last Night

Yeah, what I meant was that I hope they will give us more to work with than just the starter set monsters between the time the PHB and MM are released. We can probably expect much more than that eventually, just not sure when.

D&D 5E (2014) We Played 5th Edition for the First Time Last Night

You thought right. http://www.enworld.org/forum/content.php?1631-Dungeons-Dragons-Starter-Set-Fantasy-Roleplaying-Fundamentals-(D-D-Boxed-Game)-Hits-Amazon!#.U8AN5PldV8E Although it remains to be seen how many monsters we will get in the updated Basic PDF; hopefully it will be more than just...

D&D 5E (2014) We Played 5th Edition for the First Time Last Night

It's slightly out of date, I couldn't tell you exactly when it was published. Here is another thread that talks about it in more detail and offers suggestions for bringing it more in line with the current rules. Hopefully WotC will release some more official monsters soon, perhaps updating the...

D&D 5E (2014) We Played 5th Edition for the First Time Last Night

Makes sense. I'll have to print off a couple more copies of the PDF for the table. The nice thing is that they will be useful even after the PHB is out for those who don't have one or who just want to look up something quick that they know is in the Basic rules.

D&D 5E (2014) We Played 5th Edition for the First Time Last Night

You're welcome. I'm getting it too, been playing for 31 years. :) I have this thing about buying starter boxes when every new edition comes out. I find that they help me ease into a new edition and usually the maps etc are a good value even if I don't run the adventures. I'm curious. The two...

D&D 5E (2014) We Played 5th Edition for the First Time Last Night

Glad you had a good time. Here's a link Mike Mearls tweeted for some extra monsters: http://media.wizards.com/downloads/dnd/LoCS_Stats_Next.pdf

    D&D 5E (2014) so, mountain dwarf wizards...

Yeah, but you're trading away extra offense (Int) at lower levels for extra defense (HP, AC). At higher levels, neither is really an issue because you catch up to 20 Int, and the extra AC and HP aren't significant. For single class wizards, it seems fine to me either way, play a mountain dwarf...

D&D 5E (2014) My New Players Have Quit 5th Edition

That works too, though I'm not personally a fan of the "it was all a dream" method, it has some advantages, like not having to reroll.

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Skills

Contest, with the orc making a passive check. Since it's a contest, a tie means things stay the same. The orc doesn't spot you. So it has the same effect as a DC, but technically it's still a contest. It's still a contest, so same as above.... a tie means the situation doesn't change. The...

D&D 5E (2014) My New Players Have Quit 5th Edition

The title of this thread makes me curious. Did you explain that they can roll up another character if they die before the game started? In my groups, even with new players, we would have laughed this off and just rerolled. It takes 5 minutes to make a character, and it's often those TPK's that...

D&D 5E (2014) Ability Scores: Bonuses and Penalties! Optional in DMG?

I think the reason that penalties don't exist is that penalties aren't needed. We may not agree with all the numbers, or even the idea of it, but for balance and to reinforce fluff with mechanics there is clearly a certain target for ability scores for each race, based on the idea that humans...

    D&D 5E (2014) Forgotten Realms

It makes sense that they would release adventures that can be used in any era, so that's good. I'll just set my campaign in 1487 and use my 4th edition books until the new stuff comes out.
