    Everybody has Spring Attack

Feat tax is a term I'd use to describe a feat that is needed to be viable in combat, like some believe the weapon expertise feats in 4e to be, not feats that are needed to be viable in a specific combat role. Otherwise, all feats are feat taxes; i.e. there are a lot of "archer feats". But this...

    Everybody has Spring Attack

I agree that fun is subjective, and I will agree to disagree with you about what is fun with respect to ranged attacks. But I think you'd enjoy playing in my game at least slightly more than nailing appendages to a table. IMC you'd have the option to have it your way by taking a spring...

    Everybody has Spring Attack

I don't want my game to work like actual ranged fighting. I want it to be fun.

    Everybody has Spring Attack

IMO attacking or casting a spell should end your turn unless you have a feat or class ability that lets you do otherwise. Kobold carousels are not nearly as bad as kobold snipers shooting from battlements and ducking into cover. Players shouldn't have to ready an action to fight most things.

    Organic Iconics

Just read the Discussing Iconics article and my first thought was "Wow, I could care less." Then I got to thinking more, and realized even though I don't care whether iconic characters are used or not, I do care whether or not there are interesting characters in the rulebooks. Iconics are...

A plea to stop over-complicating the base system.

Providing feedback or suggestions in an open playtest is hardly 'design by committee'. WotC is still designing the game, not us. I actually do agree with the OP that a simple core is important. To put it in an even better way: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not...

A plea to stop over-complicating the base system.

Good. They should suggest whatever they want. Just because the OP or you or I disagree with an idea as "too radical" doesn't mean it shouldn't be suggested. We're talking about an open playtest here. When we tell people not to make suggestions, it reduces the chance for innovation. I...

I see no reason why people can't suggest innovations.

    Playtest - family group

Thanks for the comments. I had a good time DM'ing this one. The players chose a very potent combination of fighter and healing cleric, and the fact that the goblins were light sensitive made the cleric of Pelor especially potent. They made some mistakes, IMO, but they also made some clever...

    Playtest - family group

My kids were at my mom's, but a friend of mine came by and he and my wife played. They chose the fighter and the human cleric, and I had them play them at 3rd level. I decided against letting them play multiple characters this time. They chose the goblin caves. I thought it was going to be a...

    Playtest - family group

I ran it for my wife and two boys (11, 14) who played all five characters. The youngest took on the fighter, and the other two split up the others. I've DM'd and played all sorts of editions since BECMI in 1982. They've primarily played 3e and 4e. We had a good time, but I think we enjoy...

Does Anyone Find the Encumbrance Amounts Unrealistic?

One good thing about the 10 x multiplier is that someone with a decent Strength can carry a wounded person off the battlefield without a reduction in speed, making escapes possible without abandoning people in a non-heroic fashion. I don't think player characters run away enough as it is...

The playtest reports really demonstrate ...

Yes, ironic. However, I think maybe I'll give Mearls the benefit of the doubt. I've changed my mind about many things in the last 12 years, in particular the quality of game design of early D&D products. There are many things that OD&D and 1E and 2E got right that I never gave them credit...

    D&D 5E (2014) Armor in D&DNext

Just like there should be reasons for a fighter to want to use different weapons, there should be reasons for them to want to use different types of armor. I want to see fighters wearing plate, scale, leather, and even no armor. The problem is that basing their decision of what armor to wear...

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

So why is it you dislike automatic damage every round? What would your opinion be of an aura ability that did 1 point of damage per round to everything within 5ft.? Personally I think it's fine because I think 1st level characters should feel more powerful than some monsters, and because it...

So the playtest packages coming online tonight at midnight or tomorrow?

Worked for me. Still haven't gotten the follow up e-mail even though it's been over an hour, but I guess my account was given access. Edit: Looks like the e-mail took 90 minutes to arrive, instead of 30-60 minutes, but I did finally get it.

So the playtest packages coming online tonight at midnight or tomorrow?

Sort of a clunky sign up process. Got my e-mail: and after logging in with my WotC account and agreeing to the terms of the playtest agreement , the web page said: So it appears that they are giving priority to those who signed up earlier (as I signed up day 1) or maybe to those with DDI...

Review of Diablo 3 by Blizzard Entertainment

This review seems overly critical. Playing a Diablo game for the story is missing the point. It's possible, but not very likely that you will be satisfied. The vast majority of game time is spent killing thousands of monsters and taking their stuff, not talking or viewing cinematics. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E - Would you buy e-Books?

I chose the first option. If they would include e-books for free with the purchase of the hardbacks, that would encourage me to buy more hardbacks.

    Classes are VERY niche protective
