Prose, Terminology, Fluff, & Presentation: Spreadsheets or Haiku?

I showed my 14 year old the sleep spell descriptions and asked him which one he preferred. He chose the 3rd edition one, and I asked him why. He said "Because it actually puts them to sleep, while the 4th edition one just slows them." So ironically, he didn't read the entire 4th edition...

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

Healing surges (enough has been said about this) Non-magical healing (except for second wind) Five page character sheets for a level 1 character Too many feats that are not compelling Homogenized structure for classes (everyone is AEDU, somewhat fixed with essentials) Milestones (pointless...

    One Page Character Sheets

I don't either, at least not for all my D&D campaigns, but I want the option to go to it with some groups that I DM, particularly for those who still are 12-13 years old and playing for the first time. From what the designers have told us, it will be a modular system, and the DM can allow more...

    One Page Character Sheets

I agree with all that. My thinking is that if it takes up more than one page to accomplish the above goals with just the core parts of the system for a low level character, the system is bloated.

    One Page Character Sheets

With D&D Next as a modular rules system, my hope is that with just the basic core modules we can have a one page character sheet again, maybe even with enough room for a small illustration or other notes, and perhaps even a little white space to make it easy on the eyes. Nothing bothers me more...

On 5E Skills (aka How Game System Affects Immersion)

My only concern with the emphasis on ability scores is that ability scores are already too important with regards to which race is chosen, which magical items are desired, etc. By placing even more importance on ability scores, I fear we will see even more characters starting with 20 in their...

How Do you Feel About Healing Surges? (Read First!)

Second Wind was a minor action in Gamma World, double checked it. I house rule my 4e campaign to make it heal for your bloodied value just like Gamma World, but keep it as a move action, since dwarves can use it as a minor. Gives the player characters a little more room for error, makes the...

How Do you Feel About Healing Surges? (Read First!)

I agree. Gamma World does a good job with second wind IMO. You gain back half your hit points as a minor action. No healing surges.

    Themes and Feats

Yeah, that's what I meant. I'd be ok with that too. And now that I think about it more I really don't think D&D needs roleplaying themes with or without game mechanics anyway. Roleplaying should just happen without too much rules, and not be forced down people's throats. No matter how they...

    Themes and Feats

I think you misunderstand. With three separate silos you wouldn't have to choose between these. You'd get options in each category. Sorry I wasn't very clear about that.

    Themes and Feats

Pillars and Silos It would be nice to see customization silos for mechanics for each of the three pillars of play. What I'd like to see are multiple theme packages: Combat themes: Nothing but feats that deal with combat. Exploration themes: Skills and Feats that enhance skills...

Intentions for the new beta rules

Working on a new campaign setting based on a mix of D&D, Norse, and Egyptian mythology. I figure the playtest will be a good time to launch it, and if we like 5e we will keep it that way.

    DDN needs more gods!

Imagine there's no heaven? I wonder if I can.

    Please no monster class levels

Themes instead of monster races. In fact, instead of picking a race, perhaps we should think of it as picking a racial theme. Designing races like themes has a lot of benefits, especially with regards to adding game mechanics that reinforce the feel of a particular culture or campaign...

    Screw Nostalgia

Mowing down minions can be awesome. What makes them not awesome is when DM's: - Make it obvious that a certain creature is a minion right from the start. - Don't use enough minions. - Use minions that aren't high enough level. Create an encounter with lots of minions to mow down, interspersed...

    The Sky is Not Falling

I think the silver lining is that Monte left early in the project. Whether you like him as a designer or not, the worst thing that could have happened is if he persisted in a project he didn't believe in. Game designers need to be enthusiastic about their work to do their best, and if he had...

    Easy Paladin Poll

My explanation was in my post above...I felt like it was more fun that way, so that's how I'd like to see LG paladins in the core rules. Sure I could house rule it and say "LG paladins only", but you could do the same and say "Your paladin can be of any alignment". As a DM, I want as few house...

    Easy Paladin Poll

I voted LG only, somewhat to my own surprise. My change of heart being that I think in hindsight I enjoyed the social challenges of having LG only paladins in my groups more than we enjoyed having the option of a paladin of any alignment. The interaction of the do gooder paladins with the rest...

D&D 5E (2014) Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

I am disappointed that Monte is leaving, but if the silver lining is that if he was unhappy it is good for everyone that he chose to leave early in the process.

    D&D 5E (2014) What can BECMI offer D&D Next?

What I'd like D&D Next to take away from BECMI / BD&D: The idea that you can start a campaign with minimal rules and options and increase your options slowly to the give the players and DM time to master the game as they go along. BECMI defined itself by creating tiers of rules complexity...
