Why is the Vancian system still so popular?

Nostalgia sure, but more than that, strategic selection of spells is fun for some people. Part of the fun of playing a wizard used to be having the right spell at the right time. The player felt smart when they chose something like Comprehend Languages and it saved the day. Or perhaps a...

Suggest Your "Rule of Three" Questions for Next Week (4/17)

How do you plan to address what seems to me like a cancerous proliferation of feats, classes, races, powers, and themes in D&D Next? I like lots of options, but every time one of my players tries to make even a 1st level 4th edition character it takes forever, and some of the classes (seeker)...

    D&D 5E (2014) What 5E needs is a hundred classes

I would rather see fewer classes than too many. I can roll up a fighter in any edition, call him a barbarian, and roleplay him like one. Add in systems like skills, feats, and themes, and I can even make my fighter play much like a barbarian. Does that mean that we don't need a barbarian...

The Ranger: to Spell or not to Spell

I agree that they should have those abilities, but I prefer martial practices or some other system.

    The One Hour D&D Game

The one hour adventure sounds hard to do, but if you've played BECMI (or probably OD&D) you would understand that it is perfectly feasible. Back when: Character sheets were on one page and you even had room to draw a picture of your character. There were only one or two rule books, and people...

    Level Titles

Save something for Dragon articles. Level titles don't belong in the core rules.

The mix of magical, pseudo magical, and non-magical classes

As long as the archetypes represented by the classes all look cool, I'm ok with any proportion, and generally let players play what they like. I have been tempted to run a non-magical campaign, or an all magical campaign, but I don't play enough to experiment with such things.

If they had a free day...

I would challenge them to design a character sheet for 5E that fits on one page with a comfortable to read font and plenty of room. And then propose that those elements make up the core of the system and everything else becomes modular options.

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

Rules seem to be the predominant reason. I sort of expected more people to choose the "I already bought a bunch of books" or "I couldn't afford it." but I guess people find a way to afford things they really want. (and I'm a firm believer that D&D is one of the best entertainment values out...

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

Didn't mean to imply that it was. I'm just interested in that aspect of how a new edition affects the hobby as a whole.

What is a rogue to you?

For me: Rogue is to Thief as Fighter is to Barbarian. I don't see why we can't have both a rogue and thief class. If they plan to put all the classes from all the edition Player's Handbooks into the game, they really should do just that.

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

I am nearly in this camp. I usually adopt the latest version. And i used to be a little embarrassed about it; as a critical thinker, I don't want to have the fan boy label, and jumping on the latest bandwagon seems to earn you that sometimes. But over time I think I've decided that I have...

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

Makes sense to me. I tried to cover all the bases with the poll, but I know it's not perfect.

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

Fair enough. Doesn't prove that you're not Chaotic Neutral though!

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

I would say the last option only. 2+ years is a long time, and I'd say you've supported newer editions consistently, even if you changed your mind.

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

Odd, seems to be there for me. thx for the reply though.

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

This is a "select all that apply" poll; but if you select the last option, please don't select anything else, and don't select #7 if you selected anything else (because if you do I'll know you're chaotic neutral). The "earlier edition" the poll refers to could be any edition other than the...

    Player Characters As Lie Detectors

There needs to be less focus on skills, and more focus on roleplaying. I would like to see skills like Insight die in the same fire with skill challenges. If you're roleplaying Bob the Barbarian well, you can choose to ignore that Lord Oakdale is obviously lying, or you can choose not believe...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - Wizards Like to Roll Dice Too

I admit that I miss saving throws sometimes. Not save or die (I don't miss those) but taking half damage from dragon's breath, or save vs wands when dodging a trap, that type of thing. Incidentally, when Monte said 4e doesn't have saving throws, I agree. The saving throws you make when dying...

D&D 5E (2014) So why are you buying 5th edition?

I will buy it because I have loved every edition of D&D.
