Pirates and encounter ideas for Spelljammer

I ran a 3.5 Spelljammer campaign once and over the course of many, many adventures dropped hints about fearful gnome pirates. Every other time we played they would run into some NPC talking about the latest gnomish attack, etc, and hear about how the local king was marshalling forces against...

    Your intro to RPGs

1982, I was in the 8th grade attending a private Christian school. I learned about D&D in Bible class, and decided that since they warned me about it, it must be a lot of fun. After all, they had warned us about Rock n Roll, and I found out that was great, so this game about pretending to use...

What do you think the 2012 setting is gonna be?

Bah, I guess Strawberry Shortcake was too dark and gritty.

What do you think the 2012 setting is gonna be?

These are well reasoned arguments why it wouldn't be well received. However, it has not been done in D&D to my knowledge, at least not on this scale, and the attitude of WotC's fans is the biggest reason to try something new. Their previous strategies haven't worked.

What do you think the 2012 setting is gonna be?

I'm hoping for a setting like Torg. No, not a cross-genre setting...I'd still want and expect it to be D&D style fantasy. But one thing West End Games tried to do with Torg was to create a truly living campaign world. At the end of every published adventure was a questionnaire and you could...

    The 5e toolkit

I guess I'd like to see: More Layers so we don't need so many classes. Get it down to seven or eight classes to cover the basic archetypes. For more esoteric concepts like ardents and seekers, or even assassins and barbarians, use layers like themes and paragon paths to define these character...

    AD&D Publication Timeline -- weird

Or more likely, people didn't feel so entitled to instant gratifcation like in the Internet age, and they just got by with the rules they had for months until the DMG was done, and were happy about it. Then again there probably were probably dozens upon dozens of gripes on dial up BBS...

    Avenger

A quick funeral pyre seems adequate. If they are followers of Corellon, maybe casting a Gentle Repose ritual (from a scroll if you don't have the Ritual Casting feat). One thing I would caution against is a "I kill all of {insert race here}" with no tolerance. D&D worlds are full of variety...

    Essentials multiclassing playtest?

Bringing this old post back up because it looks like they are through playtesting and the have the final version up, even though the link is still named 'playtest' Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (New Hybrid and Multiclass Options)

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

Diatribe? It certainly didn't come off to me as a diatribe. It seemed more like an earnest attempt to communicate. Agree, absolutes are generally bad. I guess this depends on how important realistic skills are to you. In D&D, particularly in a theoretical 4E where skills are optional, I'd...

    Margaret Weiss gets Marvel license

I seem to remember the Secret Wars module in TSR's old MSH rpg to be good fun, despite being exactly the same strategy. No one seemed to care that we had all read it, or that our Secret Wars turned out differently. I guess we never worried about continuity much in that game or matching the...

    Reworking HS1: The Slaying Stone

Also have something in mind to keep the adventure going if they fail the skill challenge against the behir. The module doesn't really go into that. Other than that, it's a pretty good adventure.

    Rule of 3 -- 7/11/11

Must have not been something they needed at the time, but it had to be a good pitch for them to make it an example. Which one was it?

    Rule of 3 -- 7/11/11

I guess that's one way of looking at it. I'll explain my opinion. I feel like Essentials is a 4.5 because they are changing 4.0 to conform to Essentials. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. In fact I like it. But how anyone can say that it's not a new version of the rules when the classes...

    Rule of 3 -- 7/11/11

    1. I'm sort of taking this as an admission that Essentials really is 4.5, even if it wasn't intended to be initially, and even if it was chosen to be so retroactively. Maybe they've already admitted as much elsewhere, since I haven't been playing for a while. 3. Very nice of them to create...

    Rule of Three 7/11/11

Oops didn't see diceforhire's post. Just ignore this one. Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (Rule-of-Three: 07/11/2011) It is good to see that they don't feel boxed into one method of creating classes; I like the effect of this in the Essentials classes. My 10...

    Optimal Number of classes?

I look at it from a different angle. If a heroic archetype is important to the setting, there should be a class devoted to that archetype. If the paladin archetype is important to the setting, and the class is too mechanically similar to the fighter, build a better paladin. Make the role...

    Optimal Number of classes?

I'm in agreement with Wheresmyd20, and I'll add that I think I prefer more layering systems like feats, backgrounds, builds, themes, skills, paragon paths, and epic destinies for greater customization of a fewer number of classes. I could get by in D&D with a fighter, rogue, wizard, and...

PC threatening PC. What to do?

Just because an action is "in character" does not mean it is good role playing or in the best interest of the game. IMO the player of the cleric is bored and acting selfishly. I'd keep the party together and see how it plays out with all the player characters interacting. Splitting the...
