Have you ever refused to come back from the dead?

I generally DM, and when I play it's usually a one-shot or mini-campaign so I've never really had to make that choice. However, in the campaigns I run, the permanent deaths outnumber the temporary ones. Notably, one of my players refused to have his dwarf raised just because he didn't think it...

    The Shattered Gates of Slaughtergard

Yeah, the valley was pretty well done as a mini-campaign setting, though I think it could have been a little more "mini", considering that the idea is that you can drop it right into an existing setting. At more than 200 miles in diameter, the valley is hard to just drop in anywhere. I'm not...

    The Shattered Gates of Slaughtergard

Too late, I already bought it, I was just looking for some discussion about it. Stormborn & Rafael, thanks for the links, I will check them out (but don't let that stop anyone who has more to say about it here, I'm still reading).

Perennial campaign worlds vs. one-shot campaign worlds

I like the idea of a perennial campaign worlds for my standard D&D fantasy, long term campaigns, but like using other worlds for games that have a different focus, like a pulpy Eberron adventure or a gritty Dark Sun mini-series.

    The Shattered Gates of Slaughtergard

Maybe I was just out of the loop this winter, but I am sort of surprised that I have seen no talk of this adventure, nor are there any reviews of it in the database. I was behind on my reading the past few months and am just getting to it now. Though not anything revolutionary, it seems okay...

30 Years of Weird - Strangest Campaigns Ever

Green Adam, is the thread title a nod to the Flaming Lips' 20 Years of Weird compilation?

    News on Monster Manual V

I understand that not everything fits on a given page, but making info like this the first to be cut sort of defeats the purpose of including it at all.

    How important are pretty maps?

Function over form. I love a pretty map, but it has to be able to get the job done. Jaws & Eric are right, Chris West is the master at this; his maps are beautiful while remaining completely functional. Rob Lazzaretti's maps on the other hands are aesthetically attractive but often lacking in...

    A Replacement for DRAGON?

Drop the "most likely" and this would sum up my position exactly.

Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

I've only read 5 pages of this thread, and though I would love to keep going, I do have to get back to work. That said, I did want to chime in to say that I think this is a huge mistake on WotC's part. Dragon and Dungeon are huge factors in keeping me interested in Dungeons & Dragons even...

[Star Wars] Saga Edition's New Damage System

Perhaps I need to read it again with a higher degree of attention, but from what I saw in that article, there wasn't nearly enough info about how the condition track works to even begin to judge it.

What do you think of WotC's new combat encounter or "Delve" format?

I haven't used the new format in play yet but so far I'm not a fan. It is very jarring when reading the module to flip back and forth between the main text and the tactical section. Furthermore, it often seems that where a give piece of info gets printed is based more about where it fits space...

    Drinking and gaming?

I never liked beer in high school and in general am not one to keep doing something unpleasant until I like it, so I have never been a cigarette smoker or coffee drinker. However, in college I found that always having to find something else to drink instead of beer eventually became a hassle...

    Dwight D. Eisenhower on DM'ing

Apparently Ms. Mead is unaware of that TSR published novels. ;)

Number of releases for AD&D2nd and AD&D1st

Yeah, stuff was coming out at a way faster rate in the 2e era; I'd say about 5-6 game products* a week compared to 2-3 now. *for me that means rulebooks, supplements, & adventures...not novels, art books, minis or other tie-in games. And of course that's WotC only. Lots of third-party...

Leaving Significant Other at Home to Game on V-Day?

My wife and I are going out on Friday, but that's only because we'd rather enjoy a nice dinner out when we don't have to deal with the hassle of a pre-set menu and V-day crowd. We'll probably spend this evening together anyway, but more because she just go back to town from a business trip than...

You Don't Talk Shop at the Dinner Table

We have no such restrictions. In my regular group, most of us are already friends anyway. A couple of them tend to rile up some of the others (some on purpose, some not) but not in a particularly harmful way, and not about any political/social/religious issue. Similarly, when I play with...

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

Yes, I think that returning from the dead is generally too common in D&D, so in my game I raised the level of all spells that do so by either 1 or 2 levels (I forget which), with True Resurrection being unavailable. I'll have to say, this thread seems to have a lot more good ideas for...

    What is your icon?

Mine is the DM from the Jeff Easley cover that graced the Dungeon Master's Guide (also the DM's screen) in the later half of the first edition era.
