Official Books vs Unofficial: Your group's standard is?

We don't have a formal policy but it works out that almost everything that we use is Wizard's stuff. Currently, one player uses a number of spells from Relics & Rituals but that's about it. We used a bit more in the past. One player has a psion, and we use to use a lot of the Malhavoc...

How does your group deal with rules updates?

I look at the FAQ as a potential reference to settle rules argument rather than a source of changes, and the same with Sage Advice. Updates in new books are a little different. In my opinion, there's too many changes for the sake of changes. I'm all for fixing widespread problems like the 3.0...

In your current D&D 3.5 game, do the players or DM use Psionics and the XPH (Expanded

Yes, we use them. We have one psion (telepath) in the party, and his player & I (DM) both own copies. We like the new rules a lot, they are much better than the earlier versions.

Shackled City vs Age of Worms. FIGHT!

I think that one book and a download would be the way to go. The highlights of Wormfood could make it into the appendix (the Prc, and maybe the neighborhood write up), but most of that stuff is not nearly as necessary (or as cool) as the stuff in Dungeon.

What Game Mechanics Have You "Borrowed" From 2E?

Like Torm, I sometimes use called shots but it's kind of a case by case thing. I don't think that there's really any other 2e rules that I use. I would use reflecting lightning bolts and fireballs expanding to fill the space but my players don't want to.

    DDM Rant: Dwarves...Aaaarrrgghhh!

I love dwarves, but nonetheless agree that we've had enough of them as D&D minis at this point.

Spell Compendium - Spell Name Changes

I'd be in support of getting rid of the proper names on spells too. However for those of you that want to see the history reflected, perhaps a good compromise would be to list spells like this: Grasping Hand, Bigby's Then at least you'll be looking in the right place when you refer to the...

    Where are the High Men/Dunaden?

I think that with the goal of keeping races balanced, high men wouldn't really fit very well. After all, they are really just watered down half-elves, and do we really need to water down half-elves any more than they already have been?

Does anyone else never play humans?

I agree. I'm more likely to try non-humans in one shots but in a regular campaign, I prefer to play humans and run for parties that are mostly human. The integration percentages in 3e community stat blocks are generally way too mixed for my tastes, and I find myself frequently stripping...

How often does the grapple mechanic come up in your game?

Grappling, along with bull rush, trip, and other similar special attacks, rarely come up in my game. However, if the rules were improved I think they would come up quite a bit more often, as almost every time that they do come up the person who used it says they would not have if they realized...

    Editing Whine

My editing pet peeve is when descriptions in the text don't match the maps. A recent example that suffered from some map/text disconnect was "Murder in Oakbridge" in the last issue of Dungeon. It was clear that after they had Rob Lazretti redraw the neighborhood, the various locations were...

Did we blow up Cyre (again)? [Eberron]

Oops, even though I quoted it, somehow my eyes glossed right over the "all of" in your original post. My bad.

    Isn't New Cyre in Breland?

    murder in mind...

I only skimmed the thread, but I don't think anyone has pointed this out yet... For inspiration, or for complete scenarios that you can run, check out the two Eberron murder mysteries that have been published in Dungeon. The most recent issue (#129) featured "Murder in Oakbridge" and issue...

Should 4th ed be point and level based?

There was a time when I would have said yes, but not anymore. All of those extra options are just options. The core books should be a class/level system, which in my opinion is at the heart of D&D. Also, an entirely point based system might be too difficult for newbies, and after all, D&D is...

    2007 D&D Calendar Art Vote

Another vote for Darkwell here. But unlike a lot of folks, I'm not a fan of Wayne Reynolds. His stuff just seems to ackward to me.

What's your favourite "Forgotten Realms" place?

Other (Tethyr), during the Interregnum. No Zaranda Star for me, thanks. Silver Marches is a close second, Dalelands third. I also like Mulhorand.

    Shackled City: Week Ten

What folks are talking about here is not the player handouts, it's the appendix with all of the stats for NPCs and stuff.

    Would you buy pre-made campaigns?

I think these campaigns are a great idea. I'd love to run one, and plan on doing so when my current campaign (a homebrew) is done. But for now, my players really want to keep going with what we've got (which is good to know), so that's what I'm doing. In particular, I think both Dungeon...

    Leaders

In my regular D&D group, we never have a leader, though I've often wished we would as we waste lots of time arguing indecisively. In other games I've played, there's often been a leader and it's worked out fine. I think it's partially something about D&D specifically, not just RPGs in...
