    Defense Roll

It's the same as the way psionics worked in 3.0. It never seemed to work real well. Our psion had a good enough bonus, and would target weak saves I think. So if he hadn't been rolling, but had been taking 10, then the monster would probably have blown the save. Since he was rolling, he had...

    Defense Roll

Because it says so in Unearthed Arcana. But UA is actually wrong, it should be 12+NPC's total attack bonus because of the way checks versus a DC work in d20 rules.

    Actions and Reactions

I'm trying to revise the way free, swift, reactions, and immediate actions work to make them fit well in my head, basically. Free actions are from the core, swift and immediate actions are from the expanded psionic handbook, among others, and reactions are what MnM calls free actions that can...

    Rogue's Opportunist Special Ability

No. It's an attack of opportunity.

    Quick and dirty Maximize+Empower

The solution in the ELH is more accurate, yours is probably a bit faster. It notes that as you roll truckloads of dice, they tend to average out, and then notes how they average. The average of Nd6 isn't N*3, it's N*3.5. On 30d6, average is 105, for an value on empowerment of 52.5. Maximized...

    Question for PDF users

Mostly onscreen only. I don't use the majority of any product, really, save core rulebooks, so pdfs are great. I make a notecard of the one spell from the pdf-book I'll be using that day and don't have a big book taking up my limited shelf space.

    Epic Spells

Epic spells are great for long ritual castings and brief spontaneous flurries. A DC 100 spell drops very quickly if you mitigate it with +10 minutes of casting time and either some assisting spellcasters, XP, or weeklong casting rites. If you need throw a DC 100 spell instantly, you can drop...

[Conan] Standing the test of time?

Is the pocket edition the same as the corrected one ("Atlantean" is the un-screwed-up reprint, right?), or is it based on the screwed up version?

Exalted 2nd edition is going to suck!

Actually, if you just use dots in exalted stats as bonuses, and roll 1d20 + attribute + skill + specialties, the game seems a lot easier to manage than if you use dice pools. Sometimes I use 2d6 or 2d10, though, so it's not completely d20, it's more tri-stat at that point. :)

So which companies got hit by the printer fiasco?

I think Mage had problems with their print run, which was why they backed off a couple of weeks from their planned GenCon release, and only had time to get a couple of hundred corrected copies printed in time for sale at the con. I saw an announcement beforehand that they would be selling like...

    Philip Reed: Phil's First Ransom

You might want to try this with a larger product. Doesn't fundable set a limit of a minimum of $10 per person? I'm not sure many people would donate $10 for a product that would normally sell for, what, a buck or two? I haven't checked your prices on your "6 foo" or "A dozen bar" products...

    Natural Armor by Type

You made armor work as DR/adamantine, right? Natural armor is thick hide. Make it DR/piercing. Then you can make it as high as you like. Dragons have nothing to fear from clubs or axes, but a well-placed arrow or lance will ruin their whole immortal-lounging-on-a-pile-of-gold day. Edit...

EMP fields on a sci-fi planet: I need scientific insight!

I don't see why not, but moons tend to orbit close enough to their primary that I'm not sure being on the "night" side would be any good protection. None of the planets in our solar system have an electromagnetic field this strong, so you're pretty much making it up, feel free to have it work...

[d20] What don't you know? (free pdf books)

I like this thread, it's highly entertaining. The correct answer is door D. You have been sentenced to go through a door that leads to death. If you go through door D, you have been to a door that leads to death, but are not necessarily dead. The other doors just kill you in painful ways.

    query re policy on 'bigwigs'

If you suck up to publishers, you end up with rpg.net, where people from white wolf can and have had the mods pull threads they didn't like, despite the thread not breaking any rules at all.

    Birthright

So you don't like the bloodlines? The domain management system works very well without them. I've hacked it to run a pbem set in outer space, with planets and solar systems taking the place of provinces. I keep planning to do up a province-scale map of eberron, too, because that place just...

What older material are you hunting for?

I keep vaguely looking for the old green-cover Mighty Fortress book at various used book stores in the area. Haven't spotted one yet, but I will, oh yes, and it will be mine.

    Gas Prices in Indy

The flying J station at that exit is generally one of the cheapest in the immediate region, and almost always has lines. It's on a big commuter route into columbus, which is also one of the biggest long-haul trucker routes (I70). Either they keep their prices a bit low trying to attract...

    An Underwhelming Terrasque Story

Unless you are using a number of house rules, um, that didn't need to happen. For one, color spray on a creature of 5 hit dice or more merely stuns it for one round. For two, held objects don't need to make saving throws versus area of effect spells if the critter holding them makes its save.

    Another "Armor as DR" Thread

Yeah, but I'm not convinced it's a problem either way. The magical enhancements to damage are much better than magical enhancements to armor. For a +1 to armor, you get +1 DR. For a +1 to a weapon, you can get a straight +1 to-hit and damage, or +1d6 damage, which outclasses the +1 to armor...
