    D&D 5E (2014) Epic Monsters: Mothman

Can the Mothman summon Richard Gere? That might possibly be too scary for my games.

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the polearm and taking back its seat as generally best nonprojectile weapon from the sword.

Hey If I can't reflect movie heroicness in my D&D games than what am I even playing for?

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the polearm and taking back its seat as generally best nonprojectile weapon from the sword.

Yup. That's a reasonable number I think. Longarm, sidearm, and dagger for downed and armored opponents. Edit: I think that's fairly standard for Samurai too. Bow or Polearm + longsword + dagger.

emphasis added Well, horses are very useful for carrying stuff around. Getting them into dungeons has been tricky with my DM though.

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the polearm and taking back its seat as generally best nonprojectile weapon from the sword.

I have often thought that a Halberd would be my preferred melee weapon in a zombie apocalypse. The spear point for thrusting into a brain, the axe blade for chopping off reaching limbs, the hook for pulling a zombie away from an ally. Then I smugly think how much smarter I am than those Katana...

D&D 5E (2014) Requiring players to know their character

Absolutely though we would have to get the core group of friends we play with to make the same switch, or find a different group to play with, potentially a large process of trial and error. Weighing the cost of either of those options vs. just playing with the people we like to play with and...

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the polearm and taking back its seat as generally best nonprojectile weapon from the sword.

That's an idea I can get behind. Martial weapon proficiency not only adding a slew of weapon options, but making simple weapons more effective/interesting/powerful.

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the polearm and taking back its seat as generally best nonprojectile weapon from the sword.

Polearms are awesome battlefield weapons. But D&D combat rarely takes place in a large battlefield, in my experience. The longsword has great defensive capability from it's crossguard and great versatility with half swording and mordhaus. When picking one melee weapon for carrying in a small...

D&D 5E (2014) Requiring players to know their character

Humor over text is always tough to parse. I try to use an over abundance of winky faces. I might argue with this statement, but I can absolutely confirm the inverse is true. Unhappy wife === unhappy life.

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

I always found something satisfying in my Doom Guy being beat to hell (pun intended) and smiling with that oh so bloody face and still he's a fast moving damage dealing monster. It made him feel special.

D&D 5E (2014) Requiring players to know their character

Certainly but as one of those slow players is my wife, who loves to play D&D and really does put a great deal of effort into playing but will always struggle with the mechanics of it, a swift kick in the ass will result in very undesirable consequences in my life.

D&D 5E (2014) Requiring players to know their character

While I would talk to someone I thought was not playing in good faith. I do have some players that are giving their all, but are slow. I encourage them to play simple characters but sometimes they want to be a druid. So we let them figure out which animals they want to conjure, and pull them up...

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

I have decided that HP somehow just represent the ability to move and act, and it's binary. You either can or can't. Then I don't think about it. I will resume stuffing my fingers in my ears and saying "la la la la" now.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

Yup those. But we've reached the point where they amount to 1/6 of the in game Rager options. But I should stop thread derailing now.

D&D General I'm reading the Forgotten Realms Novels- #202 The Howling Delve by Jaleigh Johnson (Dungeons 2)

I don't think we were supposed to like it. Dating someone just because they are the only Human you interact with on a day to day basis was always bound for failure (or at least extremely unlikely to be compatible personalities given the small dating pool). It ended just about the only way it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

Finding mythical or even fictional examples of those who intentionally Rage to their benefit is pretty hard. That combined with all the various sources of Rage (Divine power, elemental source, Ancestors, anger, animal instinct) has lead me to believe it is a poorly named ability. I have come to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

Sleep is potent at low levels and entirely useless at high levels. Seems balanced to me.

    OD&D First Character Death

A Rogue Scientist in a game of Rifts. Some bad guys (I can't remember) were carrying these big glowing boxes. The party Headhunter shot one of these manual laborers and they dropped the box. Which exploded. The Headhunter survived. My Rogue Scientist did not. My armor wasn't as good as the...

D&D General Is character class an in-world concept in your campaigns?

Because I am a lazy DM. Oh I'm so lazy. I buy book, I run adventure from book. In the middle I try to adjudicate as fair as possible and make sure every player is getting equal spotlight, and that everyone is having fun. Oh powerful adversaries that's fun. But no one likes it when the DMPC...

D&D General Is character class an in-world concept in your campaigns?

I can't imagine ever putting old Elminster in my FR games. But if I did he'd have an archmage statblock. Is there anything there that's not achievable by a PC Wizard? Oh I'm sure Archmage doesn't reflect all the nuance and power of Elminster, but I don't care. Elminster is not being run by a...
