The Great D&D Schism: The End of an age and the scattering of gamers

Oh sure, but my problem with the ad at the time -- and still -- is that it talks down to me as a gamer, suggesting that the fact that I actually like this game means that somehow I'm having badwrongfun. It's not that the rules couldn't be cumbersome, but in the grand scheme of things, it didn't...

The Great D&D Schism: The End of an age and the scattering of gamers

Try looking at it from the perspective of someone who likes 3rd edition, and needs to be convinced that 4th edition is actually going to be an improvement worth coming over for (i.e., me at the time the ad came out -- and note that it failed to accomplish that objective, with me at least).

Oh you don't remember this condescending abomination of an ad? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyR2L-t87b4

The Great D&D Schism: The End of an age and the scattering of gamers

Savage Worlds is our go-to alternative, but I am actually very tempted to suggest a switch back to a Basic/Expert game for our next campaign, particularly given the many resources that are currently out there for one.

The Great D&D Schism: The End of an age and the scattering of gamers

I know the guy who hosts our game is about done with Pathfinder, because he finds it too unwieldy, especially at high levels. The problem is we don't have a consensus on a substitute, and the rest of the group likes Pathfinder, so we keep on with it. I love the game, so that suits me fine. I'd...

The Great D&D Schism: The End of an age and the scattering of gamers

Reading through the thread, two thoughts occur to me. First, with regard to the 2000-era "golden age," I certainly experienced it that way as well. It was a really pleasure to be gaming at the time. People were enthusiastic, and there was a sense that we were all pulling in the same general...

    OotS 939

Well there is the whole matter of the prophecy.

"Mockery is one of the things I hold dear, AND HE'S MAKING A MOCKERY OF IT!"

    OotS 934

Well, that may be an application of "Bigby's Expressive Single Digit," but the impression I got was that he was casting it specifically for the "expressive" aspect of it.

    Day of the Doctor

Was Jack ever in a room with Frobisher?

    Day of the Doctor

Yeah, I was having trouble even figuring out how to frame the issue -- argh! So, clearly the doctor can and has crossed his own time stream under other circumstances (the 3 doctors, the 5 doctors, and even 5 and 10 being on the Tardis together in a minisode), but it seemed that all of those...

    Day of the Doctor

I'm slightly unclear on how it is that all of the Doctors were able to a) converge on Gaillfrey in order to "hide" it in the manner they did as well as b) how all the doctors back to #1 were able to be in on the project of calculating the method of hiding it. I could understand how 10, 11, 12...

    Day of the Doctor

Even David Tennent looked noticeably older in DotD, and Paul McGann is of course 20 years older than when they did the movie. I suppose that just comes with the territory when you cast younger men. But McGann still worked for me as 8 in the minisode and Tennent wasn't distractingly older...

    Day of the Doctor

Well, the advantages to bringing back Gallifrey would include being able to bring back in some classic time lord characters, Romana primary among them. But the Time Lords did seem to gum up the works a lot when they were around. But it does allow the writers to break away from the doctor as...

    Day of the Doctor

Finally got to see "The Five(isn) Doctors" and loved it. My favorite bits were the "John Barrowman is secretly straight" joke and the change in music from the old series tinny synthesizer music to the new series bombastic orchestration music as the three old doctors moved into the new studio...

    Day of the Doctor

Actually, I think the events of this episode are reconcilable with "The End of Time" (which they actually had on here in the U.S. right before the replay of the special). 1. The Doctor acquires the moment (as seen in DotD and referenced in TEoT). 2. The Doctor disappears in order to use the...

The Night of the Doctor - new mini Doctor Who episode.

Exactly! That's much better than knowing exactly how old you are!

The Night of the Doctor - new mini Doctor Who episode.

I think it's entirely reasonable to assume that the Doctor has absolutely no idea how old he is. He just guesses.
