    Length and difficulty of combats

sorry if I've come to this thread a little late. An encounter is too easy, or trivial, if the PCs do not expend any healing surges or use any daily powers. My personal opinion on this is that unless it was a backdrop for revealing a major plot point it was a waste of valuable game time and...

    Darkland Treant

The tactic I would usually try to use with this sort of effect is to have the creature move into the zone it has created, it usually should be immune to the damage. This forces the PCs to go into the zone to engage the creature in melee, or to use powers that push, pull or slide it out. Either...

    Truly Solo Encounter

What would be even more fun is making their attacks give a cumulative vulnerable 5 cold (save ends).

LOL, how did I miss that?....... .....if I'd only learnt to read......

    Truly Solo Encounter

Its a cool idea (pun intended). Initial thoughts: 1: You say you have a 6 PC group that deals high damage? Then I would strongly suggest that you increase the creatures HPs back to about 825 HPs (MM1 levels). - My group are 6 strong with 3 strikers and even MM1 HPs arn't really enough...

    Kefka (Level 37 Solo Controller)

It looks like a good start, but I would really consider designing it around acting at least 3 times in a round. Also I can't for the life of me work out what all this "Kefka rolls a d20" or "Kefka rolls 3 d20" are all about at the end of powers? edit: It's pretty obvious once you read the...

    Darkland Treant

I think your version of Darkwood Spores might be a bit too fiddly for its own good. Really I think it would be better all round if the target took 5 necrotic and poison damage when it entered or started its turn inside the zone rather than takes 5 ongoing necrotic and poison damage (save ends)...

    Darkland Treant

Yes you can, that'd be cool. As you can see from my sig a while back I made a few monster manuals myself. I also got about 45 pages into a book of heroic tier solos (20 monsters), but I just havn't got the time I used to have so it is just sitting there on my harddrive in an unfinished and raw...

    Darkland Treant

I think the problem with your solo Darkwood Treant is that it doesn’t really feel like a fully formed solo threat. I think that the 8 movement and the healing denial aura are a little on the strong side for a level 5 creature. These are a lot more appropriate on a higher level creature as per...

    Struggling with DMing

The question I find myself asking is; is a sandbox what you really need? It seems to me that you might be better off with a slightly more linear campaign, I’m not talking railroad here, I’m talking more focused than fuzzy. To be honest the best advice I can give you is to just concentrate on...

Exarch of Tiamat (level 26 solo), Adventure Grand Finale

Here is the grand finale of the “Shrine of Tithe” section of my current campaign. This follows on directly from the three elite dragons encounter and was a level 27.5 encounter for 6 level 24 characters. The PCs had 1 round before this kicked off, which for game purposes I counted as a short...

    3 Tiamat themed elite dragons (levels 24, 25, 27)

Ok so here is another encounter from my Epic campaign. This is the penultimate encounter in my players raid on “The Shrine of Tithe”, a temple of Tiamat high in the mountains. For the record this is a level 25.5 encounter for 6 level 24 PCs and is set in a very large area with a simple stone...

    Can we eat that?

The simple answer has got to be yes. The complicated answer is probably. It all depends on how deeply you want to go into it. Really you should be able to eat the fleshy part of any Natural creature, its where meat comes from after all. You should also be able to eat the vast majority of a...

    Can we eat that?

I still get grief about a character of mine who cooked and ate a Silver Dragon (not a whole one of course, that would be outrageous!). Admittedly the silver dragon had died while it was protecting him, but “waste not want not”, he had never eaten Silver Dragon before and it was right there in...

    Minor Fell Taint/Encounter questions

Actually the xp total is 673 - 735. So 735 divided by 4 (PCs) = 184 xp which is between level 4 (175xp) and level 5 (200xp). If there are 5 PCs it will be 735 divided by 5 = 147 which is just under level 3 (150xp). In reality the threat of the encounter is probably slightly lower because...

    Minor Fell Taint/Encounter questions

Your Minor Fell Taint looks fine. The questions I find myself asking though are: - how likely is it that the group will be using psychic attacks against them? - Even if they do, how likely is it that the Minor Fell Taints will be standing next to each other so that you can chain kill them...

Level 26 Elite: Stone Golem Guardian

I designed the golems as a standard level encounter, as such I wanted to make sure it didn't drag on too long and I needed to balance the high damage output. For me the easiest way was to make sure the creature had one weak defence, reflex is the logical choice for a stone golem. I also used...

    Animus Zombie Servitor

The thing about giving monster advice is that it is always general, not specific. The creature could very well be perfect for the encounter you are planning to use it in, my comments have to take it "as is" and that means as a standard creature in a standard encounter there could be 5 of them...

Level 26 Elite: Stone Golem Guardian

Here is another creature from my campaign. I used 2 of these golems as a standard level encounter for 6 level 24 PCs. They are outer guardians of a The Shrine of Tithe, a mountain top temple to Tiamat where wealth is gathered by Tiamats followers (or extortionists as I like to think of them...
