5e combat system too simple / boring?

5e isn't going to give a player who's used to the crunch of other editions/games what she wants. That's one of the joys of 5e - it's SIMPLE. That doesn't mean it has to be boring, though. You can evoke the crunch through words. Roleplay it. The point is to get away from numbers and math and into...

D&D 5E (2014) [POLL] What drives your inspiration behind char gen?

I voted "Thematic," because I always have at least an idea what sort of character I want to play. I'm with the people who then work to make their themed characters effective through mechanics. But it's not as optimized as they can be, generally; if optimization goes against the spirit of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can I attack with a two-handed weapon while wearing, but not wielding a shield?

Absolutely. And that makes perfect sense under the RAW, where it takes time to don/doff the shield.

    D&D 5E (2014) Can I attack with a two-handed weapon while wearing, but not wielding a shield?

An interesting topic. I've used bucklers, too, in HEMA pursuits. I can testify that they really shouldn't be subject to the RAW/RAI, because they really are much easier to deal with than larger shields, from targets to heaters. I've also used them with two-handed weapons without much difficulty...

D&D 5E (2014) How many gamers ACTUALLY play in AL?

I didn't think I needed to log in to play, but I thought there was a PC management setup like Paizo has for PF. Oh, well. Now I'm even less inclined to give a crap. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) How many gamers ACTUALLY play in AL?

The Wizards site, where you log in to manage your DCI account. Haven't been able to access it for what seems like years. Customer Service can only tell me that the email address I have on file is indeed on file. Asking their system to generate a new password never has any effect. It's not...

D&D 5E (2014) Adding cantrips to paladin and ranger.

Agreed. I'd tell the PC she only has so much time. She can either learn to manipulate magic or how to be a Duellist. She can't do both.

D&D 5E (2014) How many gamers ACTUALLY play in AL?

I have no patience for it. Months and months ago, Wizkids "upgraded" their website and I haven't been able to log in since. I can't access my old stuff, it won't let me make a new login (I'd do that, because I don't care about the old 4e stuff), so screw it and screw them. I feel bad, because...

D&D 5E (2014) What settings would you like to see full support for?

B-) Now, as for what I want to see: Spelljammer. And lots of it. Please. I think I might be the only person on these boards who loved loved LOVED it, but I do not apologize. Gimme. :)

D&D 5E (2014) How many adventurers are in your world?

I used to play Twilight 2000, which had, IIRC, a much more sensible "getting better at things" system. It was a "put pips behind a skill" sort of mechanic, and periodically you'd get pips to add. So you got a little bit better at things every day in-game. That's a lot more often than, say, D&D...

D&D 5E (2014) How many adventurers are in your world?

Not cool, man. NOT COOL. I didn't need to know that! Now I'm going to be looking over my shoulder all the time. THANKS OBAMA.

D&D 5E (2014) How many adventurers are in your world?

My world has few "true" adventurers. There are many sell-swords and common mercenaries, pirates, and such. There are many people with skills represented by adventuring class levels. How they're represented, and how high are the levels they hold, is dependent on the locale; rural places have much...

D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with rogue solo burglaring in town

This right here is some pretty cool work. Nicely done! I'm going to squirrel it away for my own possible use, if you don't mind. Also, everyone, the verb is "burgle." One doesn't "go burglaring," one "burgles." Otherwise the occupation would be "burglarer," which doesn't make sense.

D&D 5E (2014) Turning a boring trap into an exciting encounter.

You're right. That's not equivalent. But I still disagree: It's not the same. It's more. It's an expectation of more detail, specifically - and only - in this one type of interaction with the game world. Why? Why reward one and not the other? That's not generally what happens. Generally what...

D&D 5E (2014) Turning a boring trap into an exciting encounter.

The trouble here is two-fold: First, the purpose of the die rolls is to obviate a requirement for narrative detail. Second, the descriptive method works for some die rolls and not for others, making it inherently unfair. Third, rewarding some players for narrative unfairly penalizes other...

D&D 5E (2014) Turning a boring trap into an exciting encounter.

I agree, except with the last bit. Choices are irrelevant, and suspense impossible, unless something is at stake. Resources - healing potions, yadda yadda yadda - are an excellent stake. Now we're going off the rails. I see this attitude all the time here, and I couldn't disagree more...

    D&D 5E (2014) Encounters and NPC/Monster Strategy Thread

THIS. This, this, this, this, and THIS. Never, EVER fall prey to the apartheid. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Anything the PCs can do, so can a foe. Foes get crits, just like the PCs. Foes get death saves. NPCs with class levels get whatever powers accrue to those levels...

    D&D 5E (2014) Encounters and NPC/Monster Strategy Thread

What everyone else said, plus: A common DM mistake is to play monsters and villains as though they are little more intelligent than a pudding. Even kobolds know to target the obvious spellcasters first. "Him in bathrobe! Hit with sling stone!" Create a battle plan for the party's foes. Hell, do...
