D&D General What is your favorite class(es), and what about makes them so fun?

The Illusionist (as far as I can remember, and I'm talking over 40 years ago...) had its own spell list, albeit with overlap from wizards, and the spells literally allowed you to change reality to suit your aims. They were almost unlimited in scope and allowed for immense creativity. Things like...

D&D General What is your favorite class(es), and what about makes them so fun?

Ah, 1E illusionists! Now there’s a welcome dose of nostalgia. They were awesome to play but also made terrifying villains for a DM.

Level Up (A5E) Scarlet Citadel for A5E

They were level 3 during level 2 of the dungeon, and they’ve just risen to level 4. They haven’t seen any action yet on the lower dungeon level, as we finished with them descending the stairs. The party comprises a paladin, an artificer, a bard and a fighter. All the players are very...

D&D General What is your favorite class(es), and what about makes them so fun?

Always far more into story/roleplay than managing resources, so I tend to opt for fighter, rogue and ranger more than any other class. I do quite like the 5e bard though, and played one in Curse of Strahd.

Level Up (A5E) Scarlet Citadel for A5E

That second level is tough! My lot got hit by the trap at the base of the stairs, battled through the hybrid ooze and negotiated a retreat with the alchemist, before getting ambushed by zombies ( spawned from the pit on level 1) on the way out, exhausted. On return they killed the alchemist...

D&D General Thoughts on running Rappan Athuk (and deadly megadungeons in general) [SPOILERS]

There’s something special about RA. Something that makes you feel like you are in the dark. And that the darkness is closing in on you. And within that darkness, something waits. Something hungry. Something evil. Not felt like that since my earliest days of gaming.

D&D 5E (2024) Looking for VTT (Foundry or Roll20) campaigns for my next (5e) campaign

Yes, I replaced the Caves of Chaos with RA. The Keep just made an effective home base, a storyline source and a “home to save” from the evil leaking out of RA. I think Zelkor’s Ferry is from the later 5e version. RA, for me, is the gold standard of mega-dungeons, though I’m currently running...

D&D 5E (2024) Looking for VTT (Foundry or Roll20) campaigns for my next (5e) campaign

I ran it back in 3.5 days and loved it. I've never played it as a player but that's definitely on my bucket list for one day. My key aims were to build a narrative around the dungeon so the players had buy-in beyond just treasure and adventure. To achieve this I transplanted the Keep on the...

D&D 5E (2014) Lore & Legends Is An Official Visual Guide to D&D 5th Edition

One thing might beat it: opening up that white box on Christmas Day 1976!

    D&D 5E (2014) Bragging on my players

We had a similar situation in Odyssey of the Dragonlords and it highlighted the different ideas of player-fun that we have in our game group. Three of the four player characters had go a bit too powerful for campaign-enjoyment. Encounters were getting too easy. Nobody’s fault really, just a...

“Don’t go down the well!” I absolutely LOVE Rappan Athuk!

    D&D 5E (2024) What the 1e-2e Transition Can Tell Us About 5.5e

The “no edged weapons” rule for clerics probably originates from Medieval European Christian rules, of which the most famous example is Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, who is shown with a club on the Bayeux Tapestry. The tapestry was commissioned by Odo to mark his half-brother’s victory at Hastings and...

    D&D 5E (2024) What the 1e-2e Transition Can Tell Us About 5.5e

I missed the 1E to 2E change completely. I’d started, aged 13, with the white boxed set in 1976 and moved seamlessly to 1E alongside my friends at school. Kept going through university, both at the uni itself and with old school friends during the holidays a bit. I left university in ‘84 and...

D&D Movie/TV Dungeons and Dragons Concept art from Paul Gerrard

I look forward to carrion crawlers, ettins and beholders appearing in the sequel. Great art.

D&D 5E (2014) Nations and Cannons: The American Crisis for DND 5E

Stating that the Seven Years War was a world war is not without merit, but to argue that it was a world war “started” by the American colonists is historically questionable. Certainly the power projection capabilities of Britain and France by the 1750s made combat in multiple theatres possible...

    D&D General Who's in the Who's Who of D&D

On the serious side: The three giant leaders (Nosnra, Grugnur and Snurre) and Eclavdra carry a lot of history in the game.

Gutboy Barrelhouse should be there! Even if only to cause havoc with spell check and my username.

D&D General How thorough do you like your settings?

Give me a beautiful map. With interesting place names and varied geographical features and climate. Give me some well-detailed sites - towns, villages, ruins - and some interesting culture, people and legends to build on. Leave a lot to my own creativity, but also give me some fully realised...
