January 2016 Sage Advice - All About AC

Jeremy implies they are official in the second to last paragraph of this months installment. With that said; 5e seems to follow the 2e framework of rules, which are to go have fun and do what you want with your style of DMing. I see no problem with modifying rules as you see fit.

January 2016 Sage Advice - All About AC

Mechanically barkskin is a more interesting spell with this ruling. It is a way for parties to help a character that might not have optimized stats, such as a Monk who picks strength over dexterity. I prefer this over yet another spell that adds X to your AC.

No WotC At Gen Con This Year?

The GenCon tech is shockingly bad and they really need to address it; with that said, the only thing that will fix the housing block is to move to a city that has more hotels near the convention space. GenCon is too big for sleepy Indy.

No WotC At Gen Con This Year?

I have no complaints with the Baldman Games people; my experience with them has been very positive. With that said last years GenCon without Wizards support was not a good experience. The location that they had in the main hall was terrible due to the crowd noise, and made concentration on...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Mearls' Comments on Fighter Subclasses Lacking Identity

I think that the real failure here is one of backgrounds not adding enough flavor to characters. I preferred the play test where backgrounds had the equivalent of a single class ability. If you wanted to play a knight much of the flavor should come from the background and not the complex vs...

Mike Mearls on stuff... (Tome Show interview from GenCon)

I am disappointed that they will be moving announcements to PAX. Their presence at GenCon 2014 for the 5e kick off was very well done, and it felt like they took a step back at GenCon 2015. Baldman Games does a good job of running Adventure League, but there is more to D&D than adventure league.

D&D 3.x 5E's Initial Raw Sales Numbers Stronger Than 3E's!

Impressive to be number one on Amazon; I wonder though if it can keep selling after the initial rush.

D&D 3.x 5E's Initial Raw Sales Numbers Stronger Than 3E's!

Zardnaar first off please excuse me if I missed the sarcasm tags in your post. Provided that you were being serious I did want to focus on the one point that you brought up that at least looks testable, and that is GenCon play numbers. 5e sold out almost all of their slots and had a very...

D&D 5E (2014) Those of you who have actually PLAYED 5e...

You only get one bonus action, one reaction, and can only use one concentration spell at a time. Look at the rules for attacks of opportunity, they are much simpler and less frequent.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the "best" character for ONLY levels 1-4

I am tempted to say fighter, as second wind and action surge are very powerful at lower level. With that said I played up to 3rd level almost 4th level at GenCon and we did not have a cleric, or any other healer, in about half of the groups; those groups were a lot more difficult. Playing a...

D&D 5E (2014) What is WotC actually working on?

D&D Adventures League is up to 10 adventures for Tyranny of Dragons, although they are not all released yet, with another 4 TBD. I am not sure how active WoTC is with these modules, but it does seem that a lot of licensed work is in progress. List of available modules and release dates here...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Champion. Needs Fixing?

There are jokes, and there is sexism. This clearly falls in the second category. This poll option says women either don't want to, or can't play games. Considering where the hobby is today, both pen and paper and computer based, this poll option was absurd.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Champion. Needs Fixing?

Girlfriend class? /threadfail. Seriously. Accepting your unexplained math at face value. Feinting attack is only better use of your bonus action at level 3 if we expect a lot of short rests over TWF style. Against AC 11:DPH = 1d6+3 or 6.5 Crit = 10% Hit = (21-11+5)/20 - 10% = 65% TWF...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unfortunate Wording

I had this issue when reading the cantrip rules and tearing through the PHB to find a reason why you would need to use a caster level to get the higher damage version of cantrips. Now with more time with the game, I accept this as being part of the flexible rules. Abilities and items are...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

One could also point out that this is the first major RPG that gave preferential treatment to FLGS with an early release window. My random anecdote: I can tell you that on my plane ride back from GenCon both the row behind me and and in front of me had a new 5e PHB out. Jets from Indy on the...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

I don't find your shadow argument to be convincing. What stops a monk from jumping from a shadow from a wall to say a shadow from a tree. Also wall spells are concentration spells which pretty much means you're not stacking them with other control spells.
