I’m not really interested in arguing about this, but the earliest DnD has, in my opinion, demonstrably clearer influences from the authors I listed than Tolkien. Perhaps not in races, but in regards to tone, objectives, and overall philosophy of the game.

This simply isn’t true. Tolkien was one influence among many. Lieber, Vance, Smith, Wellman, and above all Howard (among many others) have demonstrable influences on DnD, far more than Tolkien.

It brings me great satisfaction that WoTC has thrown all pretense out the window and is marketing straight for the furry demographic.

I think the headline of this post is perhaps confusing at best, purposefully misleading at worst. Probably somewhere in the middle, because the video does not give such a clickbait esque impression at all.

To answer the original question, no. It’s a boring move that leads to stat creeping super heroes. If it were an option I’d exclude it from the games I run.

This is a non-issue. Further proof that internet “culture” is simultaneously inane and boring.
