    Int = IQ?

I actually read (most) of his book, The Mismeasure of Man. S'mon is kind of right. It seems like the major basis for Gould's ideas is a rationalization based on disgust at the idea that two populations could have measureably different intelligences. It's not exactly Marxist, but I think what...

Clerics: Essential Class or Sacred Cow?

Sacred Cow. Desecrate it. You don't need a class for 'holy men' with spells. Instead you have a wizard who has dedicated himself to the deity of his choice. The healing spells make sense in that regard... Stuff like prayer, bless, holy aura, blasphemy etc. make a little less sense from a...

    Trombone-toting bards?

And the rapier didn't come into use until the 16th century... Were you trying to make a point?

    Name that race

I like Frazwerg a lot. Or maybe Frasswerg... seems easier to say. Either way, it seems appropriate.

Fitting other cultures into the D&D mythos?

Using an earth-analogue, I would check the mythologies of local cultures and accordingly assign demihuman civilizations in the area. This likely means that elves, at least, will only appear in northwestern Europe. Ogres are probably endemic to Asia. You'd have a variety of goblin types ranging...

OOTS 450 - Wands are for Suckers

Not that I'm complaining... but I find it pretty funny that no one has a problem with using the disembodied head of an undead for unlimited fireballs, but people have a problem with a super bouncey ball of insanity.

D&D 2 (WotDG) on British Television this Wednesday

It was way better than the first one. The first one was just embarrassing to watch (for me), but I actually enjoyed the second. It felt like real D&D.

    Themes of Magic

Has anyone else played LucasArts old adventure game, Loom? In it, you play a wizard. All spells are a series of notes - resonances on the strings of the loom. As you progress through the game, you are able to play higher notes, and cast more spells.

Plans: Evil high tech lab ideas? (Future)

The lab is automated. It has an integrated computer control. At some point, the creators decided to pull the plug on the research there. The computer had developed self-preservation instincts, and engineered a variety of creations to pull the plug on the researchers. There should be a variety of...

Just picked up RIFTs for the first time since 1993 ...

I don't think anyone would say that rifts has the best mechanics of any RPG. (A lot of people don't say that about d20 either). The game does have some awesome flavor though. I think the best thing to do with it is just extract the fluff.

    Speeding up combat

You could just fudge all your dice rolls. That would speed things up.

    "d52" Diceless Resolution Mechanic

This is a fun idea, I think. I know that Deadlands uses cards. I was thinking about developing a (personal, not to sell) system using tarot cards. I'd separate the deck into the minor arcana, which would be compared against skills to determine success, and the major arcana, which would be used...

    OotS 448

Again, you fail to see the difference. The ball isn't looking at the paladins. The paladins are looking at the ball. The spell is ALWAYS offensive in the sense that it does some harm to the recipient. Wolv0rine is dead on about the 10ft tall symbol and calling it to their attention. The bouncy...

    OotS 448

The fundamental difference is that for the touch-triggered symbol, it takes no action on the part of the paladins to activate it. With the look-triggered symbol, the paladins must actively look at it to trigger. The reason that they look is immaterial. The only way I could possibly see a...

    OotS 448

It's the same thing as pulling the cover off of a symbol on the wall. It would have been an offensive use if the ball was touch-triggered, and it went off because it bounced off of paladins.

Oh, hands down best part of the strip: Eyepatch-paladin's head flying off.

    OotS 448

This strip was simply awesome. The spell was not used offensively. Offensively in the context of the spell means "forcing activation on another by using your own actions." I think that's pretty clear from the spell description. In this case, he says 'follow the bouncing ball". Even if you...
