Edge Announced It Will Be Making Star Wars RPGs....

They are also planning to make an alternative Lot5R game based on D&D5e mechanics, to run alongside the special dice version already in print. Adventures in Rokugan: Legend of the Five Rings comes to D&D's 5e

Edge Announced It Will Be Making Star Wars RPGs....

My understanding is that there is going to be a new chain of Star Wars movies, unconnected to the Skywalker saga, coming in the near future. So, it will be interesting if that ends up creating a direction for new Star Wars games. I must admit, I’m only a passive observer. I do have the WEG 30th...

Edge Announced It Will Be Making Star Wars RPGs....

Actually, I find the news that there will be a 5e version of L5R more compelling than the headline. I’m not a fan of the propriety dice used in the current game, but still find the setting interesting enough.

    Game Design Masterclass: Ars Magica

There was, but that was when they announced the end of the 5th Edition line, which was almost a decade ago now. Not seen much sign since, which is a shame.

    Game Design Masterclass: Ars Magica

I think the earlier editions are actually simpler than the later ones in a number of respects. Might be worth having a look at Ars Magica 2nd edition, on PDF at least.

    Game Design Masterclass: Ars Magica

I think Fate is another example of a game that serves as a nexus of ideas that you could probably cite in other antecedents, but can nevertheless be judged as a whole game package for itself.

    Game Design Masterclass: Ars Magica

Well, you’ve had points build characters of high level in games like Champions previously, so I don’t think that aspect is particularly new. What Troupe style play encourages, however, is groups of mixed levels of competence and ability.

    Game Design Masterclass: Ars Magica

Like I say, I have met Traveller players that are adamant that they were using Troupe style play to man out large spacecraft in their games. That came out in 1977, so the idea may go way back even though it may not be in print. The same is probably true of a lot of ideas in the hobby. I’d note...

    Game Design Masterclass: Ars Magica

That is what I am saying. The Ars Magica setting, in the 3rd edition (which was published by White Wolf) was the historical setting of White Wolf’s WoD games. They shared groups - Order of Hermes and House/Clan Tremere came from Ars Magica originally - and tried to link in the paradigmatic...

    Game Design Masterclass: Ars Magica

Actually, White Wolf’s Storyteller mechanics are more linked as a development from Greg Stafford’s Prince Valiant (also described as a ’Storytelling game'), which used ‘dice pools’ of coins and abilities measured in dots. The WoD games switched from flipping coins to rolling D10s instead...

    Yep, correct. Been a while.

    Game Design Masterclass: Ars Magica

I never saw Melanda Land of Mystery before, although I would say that Traveller players I’ve known have often laid claim to using Troupe style play in their gaming set up, and other ideas (like spontaneous casting) may have been floating around elsewhere too (Maelstrom RPG). I don’t think the...

    Game Design Masterclass: Ars Magica

Yes it is a stat+skill+d10 vs target number. Stats range from -5 to +5 in a scale not dissimilar to D&D’s Ability bonuses. In the case of a magic roll, it is Technique+Form+Stamina (a stat) for a formulaic spell, divided by 2 if spontaneous and Fatiguing, or divided by 5 if non-fatiguing...

The Wild Beyond the Witchlight Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

Might not be to all gamers tastes, but I prefer having something a bit different. For somebody that tends to glaze over most D&D supplemental releases, this one looks interesting. Certainly, I’d say that the lifecycle of 5E is being maintained in a more sustainable way - because of the variety...

As One Million Dollar Kickstarter Ends, Another Appears!

All power to them for being successful and the numbers are incredible. One hopes they can deliver to backers in a timely fashion though, as it could be catastrophic if there are problems.

Rules FAQ How Do Death and Resurrection Work in D&D 5E?

One thing is for sure. D&D5 is a lot more forgiving than the days when I was trying to survive with my Level 1 Magic-User with just 1HP!

Teens in Space Wins Best RPG Origins Award

What haven’t I backed up? It was a game design that was originally meant to provide a very specific, investigative experience. And now it is a generic house engine. Whether you approve of that statement or not, there hasn’t been a single counter-argument to it presented here, beyond indignation...

Teens in Space Wins Best RPG Origins Award

My issue with Fenris-77 was not that he wasn’t arguing in good faith, but rather he wasn’t prepared or able to state his case. My issue with some other games on this list is that, basically, they continue to wear a moniker of being ‘indie’ when they just aren’t anymore. PbtA, regardless of...

Teens in Space Wins Best RPG Origins Award

Yes that is right. In fact, it wasn’t myself who made any claims against Teens in Space directly, as I don’t know that game system so well. However, I do relate to the poster that initially stated this notion through my own personal experience. I do feel that we are in a stagnant period of game...
