Shadowrun 1st Edition To Be Reprinted

I wanted it. It is a very happy inclusion on my shelf and the game is still the best version of Star Wars in roleplaying, without the awful memories of every movie made since....and no stupid proprietary dice! I’m also eagerly awaiting the new GW reprint of Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader.

Pathfinder Player and GM Core Are Now Available

Well, it isn’t a very good preview. Listing a bunch of changes isn’t a great primer to the uninitiated, and if this is an example of layout, I’m not really enamoured by it.

Pathfinder Player and GM Core Are Now Available

I have found it curiously hard to find previews of the product, which makes it difficult to judge it. Admittedly, it’s mostly curiosity but it would be interesting to know how the Witch Class works, for example.

Citizen, You Have The Clearance To Read This Paranoia Review

Good review, with just one caveat - It was the Red Clearance Edition that emphasised Terrorists over Communists as well. The XP Edition had considered dropping Communists too, but opted to keep them because it was funnier. While the introduction of cards in the previous edition provided a nice...

Sneak Peak of Planescape: A Preview

Am I alone in thinking that the standard edition covers are, for once, more attractive looking than the special edition alternatives?

    D&D 5E (2024) Unearthed Arcana Playtest Packet 7 Live on D&D Beyond

So having choice and a wider range of character archetypes being represented is poorly received? That’s marvellous.

    D&D 5E (2024) Unearthed Arcana Playtest Packet 7 Live on D&D Beyond

Still no chance of having Warlocks based on INT or WIS spell casting abilities. This is a disappointment for me, and I can’t see why it can’t be included. Actually, the rest seems alright and, in some cases pretty good. Are these the Subclasses that they are likely to stick with for these...

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Survey Feedback: Weapon Mastery Spectacular; Warlock and Wizard Mixed Reactions

I know it might seem to be a minor thing, but I am personally less particular about specific mechanics and rules in the game, and more about getting archetypes right. For me, one of the (relatively few, as it happens) criticisms I had of D&D5E was they got the Warlock Class wrong (for me). That...

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Survey Feedback: Weapon Mastery Spectacular; Warlock and Wizard Mixed Reactions

Oddly, that has probably persuaded me not to bother with it at all then.

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Survey Feedback: Weapon Mastery Spectacular; Warlock and Wizard Mixed Reactions

I just hope, for the Warlock, that they maintain having a choice of Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma as the spell casting Ability. That was something they got right.

Which game has your favorite magic system?

Castle Falkenstein uses a deck of playing cards. Each suit represents a type of magical effect - Hearts are for Emotional/Mental effects, Spades are for Spiritual effects, Clubs for Elemental effects (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), Diamonds are Material effects (Transformations). Each spell each...

Here Are the 2023 ENnies Nominees!

Glad to see Mongoose’s Traveller getting some recognition for Stranded and the High Guard Update. The latter does illustrate that the game systems in this game, for construction, are indeed excellent!

Spider-Verse Expansion Coming For Marvel Roleplaying

One of the things I like about it is, unlike many other superhero games, I can actually generate a character in about 5-10 minutes or so. The mechanic is really straightforward - roll ‘D616’ (3D6 with a Marvel Die included, which replaces the ‘1’ with a crit result instead) and beat a target...

Spider-Verse Expansion Coming For Marvel Roleplaying

Yes. They reduced a load of pointless math and removed the ‘Class’ stipulations from the game. There was an update file produced at the end of 2022, along with example characters. It looked a lot easier to grasp and was, as I say, a lot more promising.

Spider-Verse Expansion Coming For Marvel Roleplaying

Even though the original playtest was spectacularly awful, they made some significant adjustments and I’m actually looking forward to the release of Marvel Multiverse as something that has now got promise. Any good game needs its supplements, of course, and I’m pretty certain that those buying...

Basic Roleplaying: A Played It Review

CoC7E didn’t really prune the skill system that much, to be honest. For example, there are still separate entrees for Listen and Spot Hidden (instead of an overall perception skill), or separate entrees for Jump, Climb and Swim (instead of a general Athletics skill). Also, a number of the...

Basic Roleplaying: A Played It Review

The Sorcery rules include summon spells - Summon Demon and Summon Elemental as stated. The Sorcery system is essentially the same system used in the Elric!/Stormbringer 5th edition and the newer version of Magic World. However, it isn’t the same used in earlier editions of Stormbringer...

    Rebellion Acquires Tunnels & Trolls

Rebellion definitely seems to be fishing around a way to approaching the RPG hobby. They’re definitely fans. I wouldn’t be surprised, and would welcome, a return to the old Games Workshop version of the Judge Dredd game. The rules still hold up and they’ve already successfully re-released the...

    RPG Evolution: Are RPGs Art?

Anything with a craft and an aesthetic can be an artform. Yes, the design of roleplaying games and even the performance of running or playing one, can be an art. Is it worth worrying about? Probably not.

RPG Evolution: Multiverses All the Way Down

The worst thing about multiverses, if used like Marvel Cinematic Universe seem to be doing at the moment, is that it cheapens the drama. That is, if a character dies for example, then the audience immediately knows that the character can be brought back again by simply referring to another...
