Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

No, probably not. The experience will be too different.

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

Hrm. Thanks for the update. Seems like a large gamble on WotC's part to me though. To me, board game's and TTRPG's are very different things. I wonder what will happen when buyers of the new starter set buy another random D&D adventure (perhaps along with the PHB or even the DMG or MM), and then...

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

Alright, but ... why ? Are they trying to 'trick' board gamers into playing TTRPG's ? They seem to be very different things, to me at least.

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

Hrm. That's odd. Over at DNDBeyond, WotC seems to advertise the new starter set as a 'board game', rather than an TTRPG ? Heroes of the Borderlands - Shop D&D Beyond

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

Well, I only ever fill up the tank up to $20 USD anyway, so none of these price hikes have any impact on me.

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

IMHO, the prices that Games Workshop has for any single product whatsoever - miniatures, rulebooks or 'codexes', boxed sets etc. - are priced at the high-end of the market, not the 'beginner-looking-to-try-out-a-game-and-see-if-I-like-it' price range.

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

Good point, and I don't have a real answer. The point I was trying to make, was that I only played through 'Lost Mines' (with no other experience), and was honestly surprised that some people considered that to be the best WotC has ever produced. Which means that either (as others have pointed...

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

If - as some people claim - 'Lost Mine of Phandalver' is somehow the best 'adventure' WotC has ever produced, then the rest must be really really crappy. I played through the module, and was not impressed.

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

Although I may be mistaken, but what I found to be a really great idea of the Pathfinder 2e Beginner Box was that they included a dice set with: each die of a different color, and then having the same dice - including colors - represented on the character sheet. So that you could easily go like...

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

Not in my personal experience, no. For example, to me, 'Lost Mine of Phandalver' was a solid experience of how the game actually works 'post-starter-set', without any changes to the actual game-play experience. Your experience may have been different though.

At best, it's a 'gateway product', not showing the actual game but instead being in the space between an ordinary board game and an actual TTRPG.

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

I'm slightly confused. With this starter-set, it looks like they are trying to turn D&D into a boardgame-like thing, that doesn't really translate to how most people are currently playing TTRPG's, including but mot limited to D&D ? And setting up wrong expectations about how the potential buyers...

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

So, which is it ? Is it 'without a playtest', or 'Mid-playtest retreat' ? You cannot have both. Seriously ? Sounds like lame clickbait to me.

Jess Lanzillo Joins White Wolf as Creative Director

Hrm. Seems to me that 'corporate needs' means 'more sales', which can be achieved by 'producing content based on audience demands' ? What am I missing here ?

D&D 5E (2014) Can you retry a failed skill check? How long?

Thanks for the response. I was unaware of the 'Taking 20' rule (I'm new to D&D). But doesn't all of this mean that you are taking the randomness out of the game ? I mean, you are constantly rolling dice at random. Which to me, means that even though the PC's stats are really good you could still...

D&D 5E (2014) Can you retry a failed skill check? How long?

Ah. I missed that, thanks for pointing it out. So let me see if I understand that correctly. If (in the lock picking example) they have thieves tools, and are proficient with it (or other + plusses), they will be able to unlock a door with a DC of 10 without rolling, but with a DC of 17 they...

D&D 5E (2014) Can you retry a failed skill check? How long?

But if you can just pick a lock without the chance of failure, then why have a lock on the door in the first place ? You might as well leave it unlocked ?

D&D 5E (2014) Can you retry a failed skill check? How long?

It's not. In combat, the challenge is in trying to get the enemies HP down to zero before they do the same to you. There is no such mechanic in something like trying to 'pick a lock' : it's not as if the lock gets 'slightly more picked' upon each attempt, resulting in a 'fully picked lock' in X...
