D&D 5E (2014) Can you retry a failed skill check? How long?

Hrm. Those are actually good points, but: if you can just retry until you succeed, wouldn't it be easier if you just let the player succeed without having to roll at all ? Part of what the roll means to me, is that it does mean you can actually fail at a task, and that that failure has meaning...

D&D 5E (2014) Can you retry a failed skill check? How long?

My personal issue with 'just trying again', is that it removes any real challenge. If you allow to try again infinitely, the player can just keep rolling until they finally roll a 20. I feel that if you fail to pick a lock, you are incapable to open it that way, and you are going to have to try...

D&D General D&D Beyond's Users Online Over Last Year

Ok. So specifically, the average number of registered DDB users simultaneously online at any given time ? Which, without any further details or context, does not tell you all that much, it seems ? (At least not anything beyond 'not further defined DDB usage' ?)

Ah. Thanks for the info. I like these mini's, but do not own a 3D printer.

whaitwut ? These are digital STL files for printing yourself on your own 3D printer ? I got the impression that these were physical miniatures ? Oh, well.

Ah. So do I then interpret that correctly that it only includes 'direct sales' as in 'directly through 'DnD Beyond', but not 3th parties (either digital or 'brick and mortar' selling the physical copies) ? Well, this is all getting too confusing for me to interpret 'correctly' at all now...

    Must be 'RuneQuest' duck.

Really ? Damn... I kinda like my physical books. Ok, but does that include 3th party VTT's (like, but not limited to, Roll20) ? Because if it does, then those won't show up in these DnD Beyond results, but they will count as 'digital sales'.

And.... I'm still playing it, so that sample size of 1 (our group, specifically) statistically proves that it must be doing great !

Point taken. Perhaps, but I still feel that it may still be that most people bought the physical books, and then decided to argue over the rules through some other means (reddit ? this forums ? someplace else ?) Agreed.

My interpretation is that the data ('as-is') is insufficient to say anything about the popularity of the 2024 core books, as the original post implied.

Ok. Let's see if we mean the same thing here. So I get counted no matter if : I am only using the forum, but do not have a paid account. I am only getting the UA, but do not have a paid account. I am only getting the 'claimed but free' stuff (like LMoP), but do not have a paid account. I have...

D&D General D&D Beyond's Users Online Over Last Year

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. This seems to 'only' get the data of the forum usage, and not the total amount of paid subscribers (I have an account so I can get the UA and post on the forums, but am not an active subscriber), or the amount of users/time were using/accessing the paid DNDBeyond...

Really ? Although it doesn't have to be PbtA, 'rules lighter, fiction first, high fantasy' sure seems to fit the bill. Guess I'll have to look into Daggerheart now as well. And on a side-note: it now seems that perhaps I did not derail this thread as much as I thought I did. ;)

Got it. So although our group likes longer campaigns better than one-shots, I might still suggest 'Monster of the Week' to our group as a try out/introduction to the game engine (with the expectation that if we like it we would switch to something more campaign oriented.) Thanks people, I think...

Ok. So would that be (iirc, it's been a while) Buffy like 'the first few seasons, where there literally was a new monster every episode', or more Buffy like 'the last few seasons, where there was a single BBEG throughout the entire season' ? Or in other words: Is 'Monster of the Week' designed...

Thanks for the info. I guess that what I am looking for the most, is something 'high fantasy'-ish. So I took a look at the 'Powered by the Apocalypse' entry on Wikipedia, and 'Fantasy World' (or perhaps 'Dungeon World') seem to fit that genre the best ?

Alright. So I did an (admittedly very limited) look-up of the things mentioned so far (in random order) : Blades in the Dark 13th Age Fate Core / Dresden Files Fate Core / Fate of Cthulhu Atomic Robo And I think that considering that since I am someone who only has experience with D&D 5e, both...

Thanks. So, do I understand correctly that if I got the 'Fate Core System' and something like 'Fate Worlds Volume One: Worlds on Fire' I would have the core ruleset and a few pre-written 'stories' to try it out ? Also, I have no experience with Daggerheart, but am all for 'more...
